He's not wrong. Some people
love living a lesser life in a
space the size of a large closet
surrounded by 'RV type' people.
For me, I'd have a gun to my head
by the 3rd day. Just the total lack
of storage area would drive me
insane. I have a garage, a basement,
an attic, a 1000 sq ft barn for storage.
It's heaven.

I am proud to say that I have no emotional attachment to any of my few possessions. If my house burned down completely and everything was a full loss, there is not a single possession I would miss. Assuming my wife and animals got out. I keep almost nothing from my past. If I lose my house, cars, motorcycles, etc., I don't care as they are insured and I can buy new.

That's really sad, I feel sorry
for you. What a terrible way
to live.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Why? they are just possessions. I still have the memories. I feel sorry for those dependent on their stuff, don't live in the past live for the future.

I agree don't get hung up on owning stuff. I never bought 'toys' in my life, if I wanted an RV, boat, quad, sled for a trip I rented one. The cost of the rental was always less than the first years depreciation would be. Just wouldn't use any of them enough to actually buy one. I have spent my money on travel and life experiences, wilderness hikes and canoe trips, world travel, driving (and hitch hiking) across Canada several times as well as the western US. I still have all those memories and find few people that can match the experiences I have had.

They are possessions that I've
had for decades. I broke them
in, I use them, they're part of
who I am. Like the 5" magnifying
glass I read with. It belonged
to my grandfather and I think of
that every time I use it. Why
would I not be attached to it.

So we actually agree EB the important part of that "thing" is the memories not the glass.

They are inseparable. Without the
glass there is no memory of the
glass, how could there be. The
glass itself is the source of the
memory, not the other way around.
Which is more important, passing
down an heirloom or passing down
the memory of an heirloom. The
answer is obvious.

It is not obvious to me. I think of my grandfather often, I think of when he taught me how to do something, I think of when he taught me life lessons, I think of when he pulled a prank on me. I don't need a memory aid to have those memories and they come to me at all different times and places and he died almost 40 years ago.

Wouldn't a replacement magnifying glass do the same thing? I would think every time that you used the new one you would think of the old one and your grandfather. That is what I would do.
