I agree don't get hung up on owning stuff. I never bought 'toys' in my life, if I wanted an RV, boat, quad, sled for a trip I rented one. The cost of the rental was always less than the first years depreciation would be. Just wouldn't use any of them enough to actually buy one. I have spent my money on travel and life experiences, wilderness hikes and canoe trips, world travel, driving (and hitch hiking) across Canada several times as well as the western US. I still have all those memories and find few people that can match the experiences I have had.

I have bought plenty of toys. Motorcycles, boats, etc. They are just things that can be replaced. We don't get attached to cars as we rarely keep them more than 3 years. I have favorite cars that I have had but if I really isn't emotional. I could always go back and buy another 1990 Cadillac Allante if I really want one. BTW, I like the car but it was the worst designed car that may have ever been made. I think the Yugo was probably more mechanically sound.

It is not obvious to me. I think of my grandfather often, I think of when he taught me how to do something, I think of when he taught me life lessons, I think of when he pulled a prank on me. I don't need a memory aid to have those memories and they come to me at all different times and places and he died almost 40 years ago.

I have 3 letters from my grandmas
grandfather in the Civil War. Which
would I rather have, those or the
memories of them. Take a guess.

For me just the memory of having been able to read them would be all that is important. Digitize them and store them in the cloud.

But you said you don't care about
anything, it can all be replaced. My
point is, no it can't. I have lots of
stuff that can never be replaced.

You're what I call a 'swaggerer'.
You eat crap food and brag about
it. You don't care about anything,
it can all be replaced. You can't
be bothered lifting a finger at
your house, you have 'people'
that come in that do all the
cleaning and laundry and
wiping your nose when it runs.
You swagger around looking
down your nose at everybody
like you're in some kind of class
all by yourself. You're not.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

This one I can say I am totally with EB. From my landman days alone. Texted a guy I knew and told him I was holding in my hand the same summons that was served in something like 1840! Nothing beats holding it. Or going thru my own grandfather's stuff. He was the stereotypical German who kept records of everything imaginable. Most of it dated. You got a feel for his life you would not get from a digitized copy. When I looked at those old courthouse records it was just something more to hold the very same book someone made the record of 150+ years ago.

That being said, I am in constant purge mode of my own life. Too much old stuff around. Very few old pictures of me or other things survive long around me. When I die I hope it does not take anyone long to clear out my place.

When I did antique shows you
would hear somebody say that
grandpa had one just like it,
and they'd buy the item. Never
once did the wife say, don't
bother, you have the memories,
that's enough. This has got to
be one of the dumbest conversations
I've ever been in.

What makes you think I look down on people? We are all different. I am probably the least judgmental person on here.

I am not much of a picture person. I have one picture of family and that it the picture of my wife on my desk at work. I have no pictures of my parents, sisters, or kids that are actual prints. I do have 10 years of various pictures on my iphone that I haven't deleted.
