I ran into two last week here in The Villages. As you know, the great majority of people can’t ‘flee’. Job. Family. Friends. Cost. I left for a better job and overall easier life. Politics was never a consideration. That was 35 years ago. This time it was a tiny factor. Weather WAY more important this time. |

In the sixties the riots came to town, and then White Flight began in earnest: most whites left rather quickly, typically to outlying suburbs. I can see the same with disaffected Jews fleeing NYC proper and relocating to the adjoining suburbs and beyond. Those Jews who could fled Europe when the Nazis came to power and started purging: history may repeat, especially if as the alarmists bray Mamdani takes steps to persecute Jews, take their property etc. Old Chinese curse: "May you live in interesting times." |

Mamdani or NYC is not going to start taking Jewish property, this is pure alarmism. |

I included the Jews with the rest of NYC residents: I thought I saw a news piece where he wants to somehow exert control or somehow modify ownership of rentals in the city? Could be I misunderstood: do you know what his proposal is viz. making housing more affordable and available? |

It’s semantics. If I own an apartment building and want to charge $4000 a month, and there is someone willing to pay $4000 a month, but now the Mayor limits me to charging $2500 a month, that’s a ‘taking’ of $1500 a month. Additionally, if I want to sell, the $10 million dollar building is now worth just $5 million. Should he limit presently $8 a pound beef to $5 a pound? Presently $160 Broadway ticket to $100? He’s not cutting the amount he’s asking for his re election war chest, that’s for sure! Concept. Rent control is absurd. Let the market decide what rents are. If you deem it a civic worthy necessity to provide housing for those who can’t afford the going rate, then subsidize the freeloaders like we do for welfare, Medicaid, Obamaphones, etc… |

Can you cite any sources for your fear mongering, or is it just more of your anti-Muslim fear mongering? |

| missedhervee Member since: Apr 23, 2021 Threads: 158 Posts: 5471 | I seem to recall the rent control has been effect for many years in NYC, but not universally applied to all rentals, only to some. Given that background, is the mayor now proposing to make it universal across the city? Rent control led, I believe, to much of the blight in NYC (see: sections of the Bronx) as the limitation of available rental income led to owners abandoning properties due to lack of funds needed to maintain and repair them, i.e. there no longer was enough (if any) profit in it for them. |

Fair enough, it made sense at the time, but "that was then, this is now." There is little manufacturing in NYC any more, certainly not like it was in the mid-twentieth century. We call ourselves capitalists: to me that means we worship "supply and demand, let a free market set the fair price." |
