Unlike the US and Europe, where most of the deaths are people in their late seventies and eighties, the virus is killing Mexicans at a younger age . Nearly half the deaths in Mexico are between 45 and 65 “Many of our middle-aged population develop health problems like diabetes far earlier, and that puts them at risk,” - Eduardo González-Pier, a former deputy health minster in Mexico, WSJ Overall, 70 percent of Mexicans are overweight and 14 percent are diabetics. |

I watch travel street food videos every day. In Mexico you can't find low carb meals. They all center around huge amounts of carb. Corn based or wheat based tortillas. All kinds of carb loaded beans. 70% of Mexicans being fat is no surprise, I'm surprised it's not 90%. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Tanko Member since: Aug 15, 2019 Threads: 0 Posts: 1988 | Rand Paul says the lockdowns were a big mistake. Crippled the economy and haven’t done much to curb Covid-19. Covid-19 killed nine-one hundred thousandths of one percent of the NYS population yesterday. 18 people out of 20,000,000. In Florida yesterday, the virus killed seven ten-thousandths of one percent of the population. 140 out of 21,480,000 To date, less than one-half of one percent of the US population has died from Covid-19. 42% of the deaths were in nursing homes, thanks to five democrat governors who forced them to take in Covid patients. Government response has left 47 million Americans jobless. 32% of households can’t pay their rents, 41% of businesses do not expect to re-open, the economy is expected to shrink 8%, and the only thing keeping people from starving are the trillions in government handouts. The CBO is predicting a decade of economic pain, and The Conference Board says wage growth will be the slowest in history. |

Italy vs Sweden is the best comparison we have in Europe. Italy got hit first in Europe and had large numbers of people get sick in April. Sweden had no lockdowns. Percentage of population that got COVID-19 (eventually Sweden had nearly double the rate of Italy) 0.41% Italy 0.78% Sweden Percentage of population that got COVID-19 and died (Sweden had more time to plan for treatment of the sick so death rate by cases was about half) 14.3% Italy 7.2% Sweden Deaths per 100,000 people are nearly identical 58.1 Italy 56.4 Sweden (still dying in Sweden so it will almost certainly pass Italy by the end of the summer or end of year) By the end of the year, Sweden may end up with the highest death rate in Europe except for miniscule countries. The lack of quarantines minimized the emotional impact, but ended up being far more deadly. |

I think that the economic impact in Sweden has likely been far less as well Paco. I also don't think we can say that it was far more deadly in Sweden because Covid is far from over and we have no idea yet whether lockdowns will reduce the final death counts by much if any. Remember the powers that be instituted lockdowns to flatten the curve and save the hospitals from being overloaded they have never said that it will reduce the final number of people who end up getting Covid. If by some miracle we get a vaccine in a reasonable time frame then we might reduce the total number who catch the disease by slowing its spread.
