Golfed yesterday with buddy who is essentially a Xmas tree wholesaler. Just by looking at his cars you can tell he does quite well. I asked him how his business is handling the ‘trade war’ with Canada. (He import lots of Xmas trees from Canada). His answer…. ‘Oh, Xmas trees are exempt from tariffs.’ I can assure you that when he’s making more $ this year because of the PERCEIVED extra costs due to tariffs, he’ll upgrade from his Ferrari to a Lamborghini!

Apparently there are a myriad of ‘exemptions’ for a variety of products that you and I just don’t have information on. Meanwhile, the markets keep going up as does the billions of dollars collected because of tariffs.

Answering MrV’s point about Trump trampling on the ‘emoluments’ clause,….. Yes, Trump is CLEARLY taking advantage of his Presidency in a way that would make the framers cringe! I put it as just a minor anti -Trump point as long as his actions are generally helpful to the country as a whole.

What is often missed in the discussion of deporting illegals is that the FEAR of such must lead to fewer trying to come here illegally. Under Biden/Harris I’m sure the illegals were coached to make up lies of ‘oppression’ to seek asylum, and were looked upon favorably by that administration. The mean Trump enforcers just put you back on a plane.

Back to tariffs.

The government(Federal, State,Local) has to collect money somehow.

Personal income taxes
Tariffs
Corporate income taxes
Fees (MD license, DEA number for me as an example)
Traffic tickets
Real Estate taxes
Inheritance taxes
Sales taxes
Etc…..

Remind me why all are good except tariffs?

Are you claiming tariffs negatively affect no one's business yet produce revenue? I guess money grows on trees is true.

My answer to illegal immigration is to punish the people who are hiring them as much as necessary. You don't have to deport business owners. The business operates from a physical location. No hunting down the business. Just close it up, or fine it into non-existence if it continues to employ illegals. If cities keep wanting to supply endless sanctuary to people who can never find work as an illegal, not my problem.

Yes, the current deportation policy is stupid as hell.

Seems way easier ceo just deport the illegals than close down a business and throw other people out of work as well.

Remember in the first Trump term how the TDS crowd were crying like little fairies about how we needed “more than just a wall?” Well now there is more than just a wall and they found like even bigger fairies saying stuff like this.

Why can’t they just be honest and say they want open borders?

They are just enforcing laws passed by Congress which is their job. Joe Biden refused to do this but even then you never saw a Democrat in Congress trying to change the law on deportation. The knew if they did they would be kicked out of office by the voters. People yell and scream how about the policies but nobody ever tries to change them in Congress because they are not that dumb. They know a country without borders is not a country it's a nothing.

What in the world are you talking about? There’ are American workers clamoring to fill every job. (According to Republican nonsense.)

Over 300 immigration bills have been introduced since 2015. Trump scuttled the last one co-designed by a Republican assigned to do so.

But none of those bills were to have a completely open border like you have with Joe Biden. That would be National Suicide as we're seeing. As they're seeing all over Europe, illegals are destroying the countries in Europe. Liberals are stupid and always have been. They want something, they get it, later regret it, and then ignore it like it never happened. Like transvestite men, they want to be accepted so they get a little tiny bit accepted and they push it and push it until they're reading porn books to little children in second grade. Billy wants to take Johnny's pee pee into his mouth and that's okay. No it's not. So now they're being exiled out of society again as it should be.

Trump is proving we didn’t need a new law we needed. POTUS who took it seriously and did something not one who giggled about not even going to the border to see things.

Thanks for letting us know that Xmas trees are going t gouge us this year. I have a cut your own farm nearby, so it's not a problem for me.

Xmas trees are exempt due to the USMCA deal. Let's see what Donn tries to do this time.

So where is the line?

Some of those are fees necessary to cover the cost of the program at issue (professional licenses, driver's licenses, automobile inspections, etc). Others are fines as punishment for conduct (traffic tickets, criminal sanctions, etc). Others raise revenue earmarked for specific purposes (gasoline taxes, motor vehicle excise taxes, for example). Others raise general revenue. The problem with tariffs is they ight raise revenue, but they make imported products more expensive and put upward pressure on the prices of domestic products as well

Again, prices have not increased due to tariffs yet is because (a)importers overordered inventory in time to beat the tariffs (b)certain products are exempt (c)some companies have absorbed the price increases temporarily. The stock market is cruising right along because the markets crave stability. IN April, there as uncertainty due to Donny's bluster. Now that he has backed down a bit, the markets view the current situation for now as stable. Let's see what happens when the tariffs actually take effect, if they ever do.

As for Xmas trees, it appears decorations are going to go up due to tariffs. What does your Ferrari driving golf partner have to say about that?

Think about your ‘I have a cut my own tree farm near me so tariffs won’t affect me’ comment. If it affected imported trees you don’t think your farm would raise its prices if the imported ones prices went up? Didn’t you yourself write tariffs put upward pressure on domestic products a few sentences down thread?

Good question about ‘the line’ on the blatant disregard for the emoluments clause. I just don’t think it would be good for the country to go after Trump for it right now.

The ‘cover the cost of the program’ tends to be a lie. Many fees are just a form of taxation with no ties to the actual costs involved.

Agree on the ‘stability’ part, but the stock market is of course so multi factorial that all we really post are guesses as to causes of its ups and downs. Just my point is that despite all the bad things (supposedly) Trump has done the market is up a bunch from the day he was elected.
