Stay away from the vulnerable for a few weeks then you will be immune and can dig in and help the sick or keep things open. "but if you make yourselves sheep, the wolves will eat you." Benjamin Franklin |

Season - Estimated Deaths in the US 2018-2019 34,157 (26,339 – 52,664) 2017-2018 61,000 (46,000 – 95,000) 2016-2017 38,000 (29,000 – 61,000) 2015-2016 23,000 (17,000 – 35,000) 2014-2015 51,000 (44,000 – 64,000) 2013-2014 38,000 (33,000 – 50,000) 2012-2013 43,000 (37,000 – 57,000) 2011-2012 12,000 (11,000 – 23,000) 2010-2011 37,000 (32,000 – 51,000) If 61,000 people died from the flu last season, how do we know that this coronavirus is that deadly? |

I spend all day in an office with hundreds of people. One gig at the end of the month might or might not get cancelled the other still on and I stay at a hotel. Oh my! See ya in hell Billy Yank! The President is a fink. |

Shutting down travel to China likely helped us by keeping down the speed of the spread. The one chart posted here talked about trying to keep the spread slower than it could be in order to not overwhelm medical facilities. Right or wrong, I view the ban on travel from Europe and the actions being taken by our local leaders as attempts to do the same. While some have criticized the actions in Washington, DC, others are saying good things about how it has been handled at the Federal level. There is likely truth in both directions. Inside the country, local leaders seem to be doing what they need to do to slow the spread in their areas of jurisdiction. Some will do more; some less and others can adjust by following how it goes in those areas. Without resorting to name calling, which I have challenged from both sides here and in other places, what would President (Insert Your Name) do in this situation? The stock market was already going to take a huge hit--you can't shut down parts of the economy without that happening and the Russians did us no favors getting into an oil battle with OPEC. How would you have controlled that? If you had meetings about possible actions you might take to control the spread or keep the country running, would they be open to the public? In my opinion, there has to be some discussions that everyone does not get to hear. Throw out some ideas, talk them through, then settle on a course of action. That doesn't mean that information about the virus should be keeping secret; the daily briefings are what should be happening. How would you work this issue? |

First, I’d replace the President with one who values the well being of all Americans over his re-election prospects. “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

That is nothing more than what you do everyday...pointing a finger at President Trump. That is not what my post asked...the post supposes that he isn't the President; you are. You "value the well being of all Americans over your re-election prospects". What would you do? Sadly, I thought we could get five posts before getting to a post like ams288's. I was wrong. His post exposes the lack of value of discussions here...they aren't often discussions; merely one side attacking the other. If you have no ideas, there is no sense replying to my post. |

I would do more to get people to remain calm. IMHO this weekend if not yesterday will be the peak of the hype. People think they are living in "Outbreak." People in charge are scared to death that one person will get sick and they will get the blame so wholesale cancellations. There is so far no reason to stop living your life. Instead we are seeing major chain reactions of response. I cannot even use my personal coffee cup at the ice machine at work. Really?! We now have people in two camps. Those buying out water from WMT because if they have to stay home their sink does not work? And those who go on with life, figuring you gotta die of something. Travel bans not a bad idea. Let the CDC do their thing not a bad idea. But please, plead for calm and commonsense. The President is a fink. |
