As of TODAY best estimate of number of flu deaths in US this flu season..... 30,000.
How many could have been avoided if dodos got immunized? No way to tell.
Best estimate of malaria deaths in Africa TODAY>>>>>> 1,100!
Are we up to 25 coronavirus deaths in US yet?

Not saying ignore it...... but we have lost all perspective.

Blah blah blah... you can't place a value on a human life..... But the canceled events do harm to those who wanted to participate. The economic devastation.... and it will be devastating to the hot dog salesman at the arena that now sits empty, and the maid who has no hotel room to clean, and the restaurant owner who makes no money with an empty restaurant, and the casino dealer who is furloughed, and the travel agent who has no flights to book, and the airlines that have a huge nut to pay while their planes fly half empty........

You think high school graduations won't be canceled? Proms?

No single thing I mentioned is end of the world, but added up they help make life worth living.

I'm shocked to hear this perspective from you, SOOPOO. Have you SEEN the situation in Italy? It's bleak. Hospitals overrun, health care workers exhausted, and infected since protective gear is in short supply.

What makes you think we will be any different, IF we don't implement aggressive social distancing procedures yesterday? The genie is out of the bottle. It will get almost everywhere. If we can slow down the spread, facilities will have a fighting chance.

I'll have to plead ignorance. I guess if we realize that it WILL spread, slowing it down does allow us to allocate needed resources better.

Are factories shut down in Italy? Are car dealerships open? Fitness centers? McDonalds? Is the country shut down?

Yes, the country is shut down.

All businesses have been ordered to close except pharmacies and grocery stores.

Italy on March 6 (Friday): 4,636 coronavirus cases
Italy today: 12,462 coronavirus cases

Of those 12,462 cases, there are 1,028 patients are currently hospitalized in intensive care in Italy.

In terms of bed capacity, Italy actually has more hospital beds per capita than the United States (Italy has 3.4 beds whereas USA has just 2.4 beds per 1,000 Americans.)

Trump seems to think that the warm weather will kill off the virus. It's the end of "summer" in Australia, but Australia has 128 cases. Flu season in Australia is typically June thru September. My guess is that even if new infections plummet in the USA in the summer, it won't disappear completely and then it will come roaring back aggressively in November.

The virus is going to going to run its course through the worlds population with probably about half of the people getting infected. With maybe 2% dying. We are simply trying to slow the speed of the spread now not stop it. Might as well as get used to the idea that possibly 1% of the population might die, whether that happens in 3 months or a year remains to be seen. To shut down all commerce and businesses so that people can't work and support themselves or find the food and other goods they need to survive only makes the situation worse. A 2 or 3 week shutdown is useless.

One of the great mysteries is why China was willing to shut down their entire economy for a little bug with a fatality rate of "just" 2% or 3%.

Because even if they don't die, the victims aren't just sick for 4 or 5 days. They're sick for 20 days.

You have to remember Italy is a smaller and much more dense country than America.

So raw numbers are not a fair comparison.

3-4k people in Italy is far more dramatic than in the U.S.

Also, most cities are doing a pretty good job closing large events and sporting events so America is being pretty proactive.

A lot of Saint Patrick's Day related events have been shut down due to concerns which I think is a good thing (especially since they often involve sharing alcohol and kissing strangers and lots of close proximity for long periods of time.....)

Edit: Its also probably worth mentioning, one reason (in addition to those mentioned) Italy is in such bad shape is because it also has a lot of vulnerable people. High level of older population. Lots of heavy smokers, lots of drinkers, lots of generally unhealthy people.

Poor health and old age are two things that make you less likely to survive.
