Still praying for you

Still not praying for you. Quit using
prayer as a weapon, didn't your Jesus
warn you about stuff like that?

"when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."

Or does your version say 'Go out
into the streets and brag about
your praying, inform all those
you're praying about so they
may be eternally grateful to you."

You use prayer like it's a sword
you can stick in people at will.
If prayer really worked you wouldn't
have to continually inform people
that you're doing it, it would be
obvious from the results you get.
But there are no results because
there is no god. You secretly
know this so you take matters
into your own hands.
Look at yourself for a change..

Christians have no idea how much it pisses off atheists when you tell them that you're praying for them. Praying costs you nothing, takes almost no effort, yet Christians act like they're giving you some great gift that you are supposed to be rapturously grateful for.

What they're really doing is puffing themselves up in great conceit saying, look what I'm doing for you. Look what a caring wonderful person I am that I would pray for you. Even the New testament says keep your prayers to yourself, do it in a closed room, nobody wants to hear what a wonderful person you are that you are praying for everyone. Keep that crap to yourself.

Below is SOOPOO's comment, problem with formatting.

I do not mind it. It makes the person telling me happier, and I am not affected, so I think it is overall good. If you mentioned you got a bad diagnosis, and FrG mentioned he was praying for you, it would piss you off? Really?

My devoted Christian friend just posted this:

Notice how the there is no evidence to back up their claim that God is timeless (or that God even exists) - it is mere supposition and their "view"

Of course. It's a meaningless gesture
meant to make the praying person
look like they really care and are
sacrificing something when they're
in reality just bloating up their
ego. Look at me, I'm asking god
to do something for you, ain't
I great?

Would mean something if they said
they were donating $100 to my
favorite charity, but that actually
does involve something real so it
never happens.

Hawking is a brilliant astrophysicist but it looks like he is a really bad philosopher. Why would causation need to happen in time? In fact the very argument for the first cause points out that matter, energy, space, or time did not exist. He is not being logical and your friend is right it is a theology 101 question. The evidence is in the logic of the first cause. It is like you are asking for evidence that the circle is not a square. God by necessity is timeless as well as other things such as being spiritual and all-powerful.

I'm trying to stay away from these
discussions, but good grief. 'God
by necessity' means that for the
fairy tale myth to work god has to
be whatever the storyteller wants
him to be. Not only can Superman
fly, he can leap a building in a single
bound!

God is everything you can dream
up that you want him to be. Quit
pretending he's anything but a
figment of your trained imagination.

Exactly - it is only a necessity for those who believe there is a God

Making stuff up around the
belief in gods is half the fun
of it. Look at any of the gods
in history and there's a ton
of made up fantasies. The
Xtion god is no different.
Thankfully the world in moving
into the era of science and
away from the primitive
supernatural crap that never
did anybody any good.
Hopefully not one more woman
will be killed because some god
religion thinks she's a witch.

God is necessary for there to be anything in existence. Think about it for a second. Use any or all the examples I have already given. An actual infinite regress is impossible and something that comes into existence cannot come from nothing. These two truths are enough for you to realize that there must be some all-powerful non-material cause of the universe, which we commonly call God. This alone is not my understanding of God and you are welcome to disagree with me about the nature of God, is God personal, loving, intelligent, etc. However, what you can't disagree with is the logic that given that there are contingent material things that exist in time and are moving therefore there must be a cause of these things that is a supernatural non contingent reality that is outside of time and space. There is no other option, at least not that I have heard. You are welcome to present another explanation. Again at this level the discussion is not about religion at all. It is simply philosophical truth, science, and logic.
