Elon Musk reportedly lives in a $50,000 prefab tiny home that already has a 100,000-unit waitlist.

Yup tiny. Out near his space x complex.

Yet he owns like a 20 million dollar New York City Apartment. I think Jeff Bezos paid 25 million dollars for his.

I don't think he owns a NYC apartment, and he is selling his last remaining mansion in California.

1 Bernard Arnault & family $197.9 B age 72 LVMH France
2 Jeff Bezos $193.3 B age 57 Amazon United States
3 Elon Musk $182.1 B age 50 Tesla, SpaceX United States
4 Bill Gates $132.1 B age 65 Microsoft United States
5 Mark Zuckerberg $130.8 B age 37 Facebook United States
6 Larry Page $116.4 B age 48 Google United States
7 Larry Ellison $116.3 B age 76 software United States
8 Sergey Brin $112.6 B age 47 Google United States
9 Warren Buffett $103.7 B age 90 Berkshire Hathaway United States
10 Francoise Bettencourt Meyers & family $92.8 B age 68 L'Oréal France

Supposedly this is the home where Elon Musk resides in Boca Chica

But the 10 most expensive homes for sale in Austin right now range from $6.25 million to $18.00 million. Elon Musk could buy any one of those the way most people buy a bag of potato chips.

He is still living in the prefab, but he pulled his last home off the market.

Built in 1916 by Christian de Guigne II, the wild-child progeny of a French count and a Gold Rush heiress, 891 Crystal Springs Road holds 10 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in roughly 16,000 square feet. The bulk of the home was designed by Bliss & Faville, the same architects behind the St. Francis Hotel and the Flood Mansion. The Mediterranean-style mansion comes with what you would expect from a mix California royalty and literal royalty, including a ballroom with 20-foot ceilings with original moldings, two booze cellars (one for wine and a separate one for liquor), its own private canyon and reservoir, and a pool.

The home at 891 Crystal Springs Rd, Hillsborough, CA 94010 is only 6 miles from SFO airport.

Christian de Guigne III, the son, put it on the market for $100m in 2013 when he was in his mid 70's. The price was ridiculous and Musk paid $24 million in 2017, and tried to sell it for $37 million declaring that he didn't want to own a house.

It is not clear what made him change his mind, but at his net worth the price of homes is pocket change.

Rich people seem to think size and quantity equals happiness, the bigger the better. I find the opposite to be true as I get older. The smaller my actual living space and the less I have to worry about, the happier I am. Why would I want a 16000 square foot house and a fleet of cars, it sounds horrible. Orson Welles later in life had a villa full of artwork in Italy where he spent very little time every year. But he worried about it incessantly, and was always stressed because of it. It eventually burned down destroying everything in it and when he found out it was like somebody let him out of prison. He had no idea the hold the personal property can have on you.

How does the saying go, "your possessions own you"? Something like that. When I moved onto a boat I found out how many things I really needed, it's an interesting revelation.

Elon Musk formerly owned six mansions within steps of each other in Bel Air. He said on a podcast "Possessions kind of weigh you down".

For a man of Musk's wealth a 16,000 square foot house is comparable to a cabin.

In contrast:
Bezos paid $10 million for 20,600-square-foot, five-bedroom, four-bathroom house in Medina Washington 1998.
Bezos bought a second 8,300-square-foot in Medina rumored to have cost $53 million.
Bezos bought a Spanish-style seven-bedroom, seven-bathroom mansion in Beverly Hills in 2007 for $24.45 million. It has greenhouse, a sunken and lighted tennis court, a huge swimming pool, four fountains, and a six-car garage.
In 2017 Bezos bought a comparatively modest four-bedroom, 4,568-square-foot home for $12.9 million right next door to his other Beverly Hills home.
Bezos bought the 13,600-square-foot Georgian-style mansion, expansive terraces and gardens, two guesthouses, nursery and three hothouses, tennis court, swimming pool, nine-hole golf course and motor court complete with its own service garage and gas pumps, the nine-acre Warner house for $165 million, making it the most expensive home ever sold in Los Angeles.
In 2016, Bezos paid $23 million for a 27,000-square-foot mansion in Washington, D.C.,
Bezos also owns a 30,000-acre ranch about 30 miles from the town of Van Horn, Texas.

Sure, that's why the homeless beggars are so friggin' happy with their lot in life.
