The issue with Chicago (really any City trying to do it locally) since it is such a small area it is extremely easy for guns to flow in from a few blocks over.

Whereas Cali is huge, and does not have any borders that are an urgent concern (you can't just walk across the street to buy a cheaper gun when the whole state is doing it.)

They can still 3D print themselves a ghost gun no problem. Gun laws are becoming obsolete.

Yeah, I am sure the Bloods and Crips will just stop shooting each other now.

Not overnight, and even if guns magically vanished they would still attack each other (even if it meant going back to knives.) But, it will slow their ability to acquire guns in the long term. It is a complicated topic, it will not be solved magically overnight, and even most improvements, we will not know if they are effective for decades.

So, basically you are saying that even with all the gun laws to slow them not working this one will?

I am trying to follow the logic here.

It is a step in the right direction, but it will not make a dent, as long as there are 45 states that have no limit on bulk gun purchases.

Gun traffickers go those states to purchase as many guns as they want.

Texas, Arizona and New Mexico supply the guns for the Mexican cartels.

As the places you mention do not seem to have gun violence issues I am not following how strict gun control laws are the difference here.

States with money, a well educated populice and stricter gun control laws have a lower rate of gun crimes. Not where the Red states are, by and large, including TX and AZ.

If this is the case then why does CA need to have a tax? Why do we hear about all the gun violence in Chicago vs say Salt Lake City?

CA is imposing a tax the same reasons why we tax tobacco or alcohol or recreational pot. We hear about the violent crime in Chicago vs SLC because stories about crime in CHiTown are of interest and generate clicks and copy sales. Nobody cares about SLC, even though it also has a crime problem way above the national average.

AZ is purple with gun laws written by the GOP then in power.
