California will become the first state in the nation to impose an excise tax on gun and ammunition sales under a measure signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Starting next July, the state will collect an 11% tax on retail sales of guns, gun parts and ammunition. The money would be used for gun-violence prevention, enhanced school safety and programs geared toward victims of gun violence.

I do not hate it. It is no different than charging a tax on cigarettes and using the money for tobacco control activities. Granted people near the state lines will probably just drive out of state to stock up on ammo. But, it is a start to completely ending violence in a State that already has relatively good stats.

Just more stolen money to hand out to the insiders while the sheep cheer losing a bit more of their freedoms.

Do not believe California's crime stats. That state only reports 20% of it's crime statistics to the FBI.

Actual national crime stats are much higher than the FBI is reporting.

"The estimated number of violent crimes in the U.S. decreased slightly in 2021 from 2020, according to the FBI — but the data is incomplete because 40% of law enforcement agencies nationwide failed to report their crime statistics."

Some of those who are reporting, are under reporting their crime stats.

'Philadelphia police under-reported 2021 crime data to the FBI'

'Philadelphia's homicides, which hit a historic high in 2021, according to city data, won't be fully captured in the federal data.'

How on earth is it a "start to ending violence?"

A lot of the time the money is promised to go to fund something in particular, but soon quietly just goes into the general fund. On or about the time there is some general funding crunch. Which should be soon.

It is a policy that will slow gun sales and gun proliferation. It will not solve violence overnight, but it is certainly a step in the right direction.

If that was the case then Chicago should have no gun violence since they have very few gun sales.

The issue with Chicago (really any City trying to do it locally) since it is such a small area it is extremely easy for guns to flow in from a few blocks over.

Whereas Cali is huge, and does not have any borders that are an urgent concern (you can't just walk across the street to buy a cheaper gun when the whole state is doing it.)
