Yes, we had this conversation recently. Later in this thread he says it's OK because not many people die from burglaries and home invasions. I'm convinced, as a lucky guy I give up my M1911A1... F****** NOT!!!

Yes, chickenman, and the raw odds of you killing your spouse, loved one, or yourself with that M1911A1 is much greater than you having the chance to defend yourself in a home invasion or robbery. It's your risk -- you are free to take it according to your 2nd amendment right, just as I am free not to have a gun in my home, for the reasons I stated beforehand.

Yes, there are a FEW horror stories of home invasions where the occupants were murdered, countered by thousands of accidental gun deaths, suicides, and homocides all accomplished by home guns. To me, the risk of owning a gun far outweighs the potential benefits.

I'll follow Exodus 20:13: "Thou shalt not kill", aka Commandment #6.

Holy crap. Is everybody in Canada this naive? Crackheads
don't use logic, they use the ability to survive at any cost.
Burglars are usually druggies, not the old white men you
see in the home protection commercials. You usually only
get one chance to defend yourself, why be prepared when
you have logic on your side. You may end up dead, but
at least you were logical.

Correct. Survive at any cost. Does killing another person aid their survival? Give them what they want, give them no reason to hurt you, file an insurance claim, and move on.

Your world must be pretty scary -- I'm trying to find the last incidence of a home invasion here in Niagara Falls, ON, and am coming up with bupkus.

If I am going to make a decision to own a firearm to save my family in the case of the brazen home invasion that you describe, then I might as well make the decision not to drive, not to go outside when a thunderstorm approaches, and to avoid all medications as the chance of me dying is higher in all of these cases than getting killed in a home invasion gone bad where I live (note the qualifier).

The definition of "hero" is subject to interpretation, and I hope that I've made my point clear. His action was courageous, but ill-timed and ill-thought, and now he's dead.

Here's the thing, heroes usually don't have time to think out the situation before acting. They spend their lives developing their character and possibly training formally or informally to make themselves as ready for whatever comes up as possible. But when seconds count, they have to act.

Even when you plan it may not matter. In combat no plan lasts more than 60 seconds.

As I stated before, some people will think he's a hero, and some won't. I think he was courageous and brave (never said otherwise), but not heroic. At this point I think we're splitting hairs. I think if you are a gun rights activist you'll call him a hero. If are an advocate of gun control, you'll say that this person had a gun, tried to use it, and became another victim of gun violence.

I answered your questions.

Not this one:

Anyway, do you think that cops who get shot and die in the line of duty aren't heroes?

So you would prefer that he not have "wasted" his life and just let a person shoot two cops and leave? I surely don't want to live in that kind of world.

Did you even read the article in my initial post? The COPS called him a hero.

Good to see that you and EB are bothered by this. I answered your questions. You attacked my position on buglary in the home.

A cop is not defined as a hero simply because he gets killed while in a pizza joint. Cops are heroes when they perform heroic actions, which most cops do on a regular basis.

I believe this answers the question.
