So Biden wants to nominate someone for SCOTUS this month. There is no filibuster for this, which I am happy about. Let the President pick his nominee and let her sail through even if the minority party is 100% opposed. Buttttttt....... Until further notice, the Senate is now 50-49 Republican, as a Dem Senator is (temporarily?) out of commission. I think Biden waits until he is sure he has 50 voting Dems available before he makes his nomination, even if it extends past February.

I remember there was a vote that was going to be just about tied. And one Senator or Congressman had a child's wedding or something like that and thus was going to miss the important vote. I believe a voting member from the other side agreed to abstain to help the father of the bride go to the wedding and not change the outcome of the vote. Facts are a blur but the concept is real.....

I would hope that there will be a Republican to do the same if necessary.

I agree. Confirm the nominee as quickly as possible unless there is some REAL issue found in the vetting process. Put the matter behind us and don't allow it to become anything more than a talking point when the election comes about. Trying to hold up a qualified nominee could have a negative effect on the election prospects for Republicans.

A buddy of mine is heading back to South America soon: Argentina and Uruguay.

Both look like interesting destinations, a bit different than the normal cookie-cutter trip to Europe, anyway.

Quite a European influence there in the cities, esp. Montevideo.

Interesting that you refer to 'the water heater' I suspect your home heating is more about water heating and that half the time you are trying to air-con the heat out of your homes? We very rarely have air-con over here and typical central heating uses a gas* boiler mounted within the kitchen or in the heart of the home, (*no, not gasoline) . The idea of having a central heating boiler in an unheated attic sounds plain silly. European energy efficiency rules are pretty strict, because energy is expensive here. You guys seem more easy going about energy wastage?

Having to let water drip, so as to not freeze the pipes? Weird! Our ground does not usually get cold enough for underground pipes to freeze. Pipes within the home might only freeze to exposed areas like garden taps (faucets?)

Terp's Texas assessment is right for the most part. However Texas is large and diverse in everything including Climate. There is a large region of Texas that is used to frequent brutally cold weather. The weather in Amarillo is not much different than Kansas and their winter time practices and building standards are also much the same as the North.

Also the "water heater" that Terp is referring to is not for home heating, it's for hot tap water and while it is not uncommon in Central Texas for it to be located in the attic, it is not typical. It is typically in an internal utility closet. Attic water heaters are a terrible idea, even if freezing is not a concern. If the tank leaks (and they eventually leak) it can cause thousands of dollars in damage.

ISIS leader and family killed!

Unclear, but it looks like he blew himself and his family up when he learned he was surrounded. The U.S. is claiming that they would not have harmed the family.

Either way this is huge for American security and world stability.

I am also releived because this means that we are still involved in such countries even if in a remote specop capacity.

Remember back in 2018 in 2019 when certain people on this site loved Michael Avenatti, they thought he was wonderful. CNN thought he should run for president. He was just convicted in another trial today on all counts of wire fraud and for ripping off his client Stormy Daniels for $300,000. He's already serving a jail term for trying to rip off Nike and now he's going away for maybe 20 years. The people who thought he should be president at CNN are dropping like flies. I always thought this guy was a crook, all the lies he told about Trump and Lefty's just ate it up. He is still facing the biggest trial of all in California where he's accused of ripping off millions from clients. And like all good lawyers he has maintained his innocence on every charge. Lawyers by and large are scumbags with a license to steal.
If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose.

Can you explain to me Gandler why this US terrorism is different from ISIS terrorism?

What terrorism by the U.S.?

Trying to non-lethally extract him and his family while he blows up his family?

You'd comment is emblematic of the worst kind of conservatism, the one redeeming thing many Republicans have is being strong on foriegn policy and the spreading of western values, but now Trump turned that on its head. The fact that you equate the U.S. and ISIS should speak for itself.
