Advanced societies all use more fossil fuels than less advanced societies. Less advanced societies have lower average life spans. Therefore using more fossil fuels is good for your health.

Lately it does not even look like that is right. Looking more and more like it comes from way deep in the earth where the super high pressure forces the Carbon atoms into unusually long chains.

The word fossil derives from a word meaning you dug something up from under the ground, though we are used to the noun meaning "the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism"

That is the most likely answer now. It also means that they are not finite. Therefore they are a renewable resource. Don't worry "just trust the science" it is never wrong.

More important than not finite, it means we might one day be able to make oil, even if it takes years similar to tree farms. Without oil life as we know it is over so this is important.

Green energy would include coal and oil if you can successfully produce an energy loop with little or no nasty byproducts.
