There's more cracked ice floating in it from warming. That's my guess.

My example is: would you be feel colder in a swimming pool with one big block of ice at one end and you at the other end, or would you be colder if that ice was broken up and floating all over the pool.
You're serious, aren't you?

I always wonder when the journalists come out with "warmest xyz on record" just how long those records are. Some are obviously too new to make such a statement mean much. So will we now hear "coldest temperatures on record" for the Atlantic as a headline in the NYT ? don't think so

only a science mag would dare use "more quickly than ever recorded" ... even though the same caveat might be needed

Well, it makes sense to me, but i don't know that it's true. But you can test it in your bathtub. Get two good size blocks of ice and chop one up. Fill up tub, and sit in one end, and test how fast you get cold with solid big block (representing still frozen artic regions) Then test the same thing with fragmented ice.

So, people will point out warming is not happening because ocean water is colder. I say it's the opposite. It means it is happening because this is what should happen first.

The block of ice should stay at the end of the tub with you at the other btw. The fragmented ice will naturally float out.

Journalists get their data from people called "scientists", who use a process called "science" to collect data.

Choose not to believe scientific data at one's own peril.

yep, that's why no scientist ever cringed when they saw in the papers about what their project was about ................. in your fantasy world

they get it wrong all the time!

I wonder if a cold Atlantic is affecting us on the east coast?

record low for where I live is 46 degrees F. The information from https://www.extremeweatherwatch.com/ shows this record is from the same spot since 1899 when they started to keep records, now in a heat island. The temperature at my house right now at 6:44 AM [could get lower] is also 46 degrees. I expect the official one from that spot downtown will a few degrees higher

We will decline to run the heat this morning [the day will warm up and it's a long day] but normally we do when it gets to where it is in the house, 64 degrees!

from NOAA

"2024 began with extremely warm sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Atlantic during February to March, when temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). This was the strongest warm event since 1982. Equally remarkable was the rapid transition from warm to cold SST anomalies. Never before has the eastern equatorial Atlantic swung so quickly from one to another extreme event"

I'll have to watch the full thing later

You've posted something previously where she says the basic science is very sound, expecting me to disagree. I do not. Most of my problems come from Journalists and Politicians and their interpretations and wacky solutions

Oh, I’m glad you made that clarification.
