from the Forbles article "the study was publicly challenged by economist David Friedman, [following that] one observer calculated that only 1.6 percent [of the articles] explicitly stated that man-made greenhouse gases caused at least 50 percent of global warming."

1.6% versus 97%.

Can't say, I've noticed any earthshaking recants of climate change theory in 2024. But yeah, I don't know what the answer is to specific carefully worded inquires would be today. I'd guess you'd be betting on the 50-1 horse though.

I'd put 50:1 against as the chances that humans have had no effect on climate change, or that it was not taking place at all, either bet

I'd put it 6:5 against the bet that human contribution is not significant

I'd decline to put odds for any specific %, as that is unknowable

Oceans heating up -

from the article:

"the sea's heightened temperatures have smashed previous heat records for at least 7 years in a row"

no, that wasn't the news

the news was it's hotter than it's ever been before

nobody is fooled by your spin

extreme heat in Mexico has caused 147 howler monkeys to drop dead - they're falling out of the trees as many as 10 at a time - people are tripping over them

they are critical to the country's envirornment - the article explains how and why

26 people have also died from the heat also

temps have topped 113 degrees

from the article:

"severe drought has parched most of Mexico leaving parts of the country grappling with an acute water crisis"

It’s called a hear wave. They happen. It’s hotter than it has been in 160 or so years. Which is meaningless.

massive floods have displaced more than half a million people in the southern part of Brazil

flooding was observed in an area as large as 30,000 square miles

one resident said "My house is completely underwater. I've lost everything"

it's the worst disaster of this kind ever registered in this area

the capital suffered major infrastructural damage - the city's airport, train station and bust station were flooded

one hydroelectric dam collapsed due to floodwaters and another is at imminent risk of collapse

Brazil's President blamed the tragedy on the failure of the global community to respond to climate change

He said, "This was the 3rd major flood in the same region of the country in less than a year. We and the world need to prepare every day with more plans and resources to deal with extreme climate occurrences."

This has of course been another exercise in futility, trying to change minds when politics is involved.

It's political because radical changes are being proposed and enacted

Potpie is still trying, though, and is still citing weather. If you really polled climatologists [polling was not done in that study] I think you would indeed find 97% agreement that observing weather events is the least useful way to study climate change

Well, few listened in the late 1980s when it would have been easier with much more gradual changes. It's like getting more people to plan for retirement, about 10 years before it happens.

Also, might as well point out, we will go backwards with Trump in office. So, I'm not too hopeful anyway. But doesn't mean I will give up even if that happens.

I might add DeSantis just had all references to climate removed in current legislation. Right here in Florida, one of leading targets of potential climate effects.
