rxwine, are you OK with all these ideas?

* ban sales of ICE vehicles by 2035? 12 states say they will ........ https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/states-banning-new-gas-powered-cars/

* stop the use of nitrogen in fertilizers as happened in Sri Lanka

* close all power plants using fossil fuels as is the plan for CA by 2045? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_in_California

* ban the sale of gas stoves

If you haven’t noticed, I’m bullish on technological breakthroughs at a faster than expected pace due to Ai development.

That said, without addressing whether a specific goal is ideal or will work out, timelines are important to moving things forward. You plan to lose 20 pounds in 3 months, you set your goal, but still may fail for one reason or another. But how much weight would you lose if you hadn’t planned anything at all. Same for all that.

You set your goal; you may fail, or you may even need to rethink your plan, but that’s how you move forward.

OK

I think there is danger that the backlash from stubbornly trying to make unrealistic goals 'work' will undo all progress ... in fact I predict this happens.

I may have an ace in the pocket as people may continue to notice the “weather” reports you complained about earlier, aren’t really improving. In fact, without that, I do expect it to fail.

The Pot Pies of the world might ask themselves, why didn’t they hear more about the effect El Niño is having on the world when it has been known we are under a very strong one? They might conclude, well, the Screwtapes running things know if you get technical with this stuff, you start to lose people, whereas if you just flash scary weather stuff all the time this accomplishes the goals of your agenda much better. Or the Pot Pies might decide to learn nothing.

Yes, much of the analysis concludes global warming may be what is making this El Niño so strong, but the Screwtapes know when you start putting words like ‘may’ or ‘perhaps’ into things, that dilutes your message. And the next thing you know, you have to admit it’s the 4th largest El Niño in a fairly new ability to collect that data and then deal with questions like “why isn’t it the strongest El Niño to date?” Thank god those TV people never question anything! It’d be terrible if you had to talk about how El Niño has evidently turned the West Coast drought crisis completely around. Of course Screwtapes know there’s the “that’s climate change too” Quickie you can use. But best of all, just emphasize unusually hot weather in other places and guess who will fall right into line. Newly learned: look for heat index data, not just temperature!

For the record, “El Niño is a natural climate event caused by the Southern Oscillation, … through which global warming of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean results in the development of unusually warm waters between the coast of South America and the International Date Line. This phenomenon significantly affects the global average surface temperature of the planet. A large El Niño event can raise it by as much as a few tenths of a degree Celsius“

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023%E2%80%932024_El_Ni%C3%B1o_event

NOAA is expecting it to change, “La Niña [is expected to be] developing during July-September 2024 and then persisting through the Northern Hemisphere winter. The forecast team continues to favor the dynamical model guidance, which suggests La Niña could form as early as June-August 2024, with higher confidence of La Niña during the following seasons. La Niña generally tends to follow strong El Niño events, which also provides added confidence in the model guidance favoring La Niña“ https://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/ensodisc.shtml

A problem for the Screwtapes but they have proven resourceful. And there are a lot of useful idiots out there

Am surprised Kenarman hasn't chimed in yet with you OG, except he hasn't been on the site for weeks now.

NOAA is expecting it to change,

the link is NOAA's statement on climate change - from the link:

"The changing climate and oceans have a significant impact on the nation's valuable marine life and ecosystems, and the many communities and economies that depend on them. Scientists expect environmental changes such as warming oceans, rising sea levels, frequency and intensity of floods and droughts and ocean acidification to increase with continued shifts in the planet's climate system.

These environmental changes impact every aspect of our mission. There is much at risk. Preparing for changing oceans will help sustain the nation's valuable marine resources, fisheries and coastal communities."

the 2nd link is NOAA's statement on global surface temperatures - from the link:

"The Jan.-Dec. - 2023 average surface global temperature was the highest since global records began in 1850.

2023 was North America's warmest year on record.

For 9 consecutive months global surface temperatures were record warm.

Of note, the year 2005, which was the first year to set a new global temperature record in the 21st century, is now the 12th warmest year on record

For 9 consecutive months - Apr. - Dec. - ocean surface temperatures were record warm.

The Antarctic had record low annual maximum and minimum sea ice extents during 2023."

OK, I'll have to accept this as this is the kind of thing worth citing ... no over-hyped anomalous weather here

you can pick at certain things, like the question of how long they've had data and then to go on to say "warmest on record" . However, I'm not trying to say there is no warming and not trying to say this is something to ignore

Nothing we can do to help them.

Mayor Pete Bombs CBS Interview, Blames Airline Turbulence On Climate Change, As Host Laughs In His Face

MONDAY, MAY 27, 2024
.
.
.
Transportation Secretary Mayor Pete made his rounds on Face the Nation this weekend where he was both laughed at to his face by the host and suggested during the interview that increased airline turbulence is occurring as a result of climate change.

Early in the interview CBS’s Margaret Brennan called out Mayor Pete on something we wrote about just days ago: after spending more than $7 billion since 2021 on EV infrastructure, the nation has less than 10 EV chargers to show for it.

As we noted earlier this month, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, signed by Biden in November 2021, allocated $7.5 billion for EV charging. Of this amount, $5 billion went to states as "formula funding" for the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure program to establish a network of fast chargers along major highways.

Today, there's seven chargers with a total of just 38 parking spots.

And how do you know the problem is bad if you're a Democrat? First, it was the Washington Post calling out the lunacy. Now, it's CBS. When pressed for an answer, Mayor Pete tried to deflect the issue, leading to an involuntary laugh by host Brennan.

The famous multi-tiered falls that separate Argentina and Brazil are more than twice the size of Niagara Falls — 8,858 feet. There are 275 individual drops at these sprawling waterfalls.

Although both countries share the falls, nearly 80 percent "fall" in Argentina. Both sides can be visited, with bus tours taking visitors to see the impressive falls from land, and helicopters providing aerial views.
