That’s me! The last decade + of my career I was a government worker at government pay! I evaluated the total package of salary/benefits/working conditions/lifestyle and took the government job that on salary alone paid less than other local private jobs. What were the two biggest factors? Lifetime health insurance and a defined benefit pension!

As I’ve said before, there were LOTS of workers that stayed at my hospital for lower wages BECAUSE they were SMART enough to figure in how much the benefits were worth. I guess technically I was one of them!

And I always want to remind our listening audience, that not having health insurance does not mean you don’t get healthcare. No one was turned away from our ER for not having insurance. Our clinics took everyone, and had a ‘Medicaid sign up team’ for those without insurance.

I’ve said this before. If we were starting from scratch, it makes sense as a concept to have free healthcare for all, like we have free schools, free police services, free firemen…. (Free means paid for by taxes). But my experience dealing with Medicaid (the worst), Medicare (second worst), and Workers comp/no fault (third worst) leads me to believe it will be a mess if we transition to ‘free healthcare for all’.

Yeah, but I would put EVERYONE on single payer. THEN maybe the issues would get fixed. including all of CONGRESS AND SCOTUS with zero advantages except the degree of illness.

When Mayor Bloomberg left office in 2013, he left Mayor Bill deBlasio with a balanced city budget.

Only twelve years of Democrat Mayors later, new Mayor Mamdami is facing a $12 billion budget gap.

In a few weeks he has to explain how he intends to close that gap.

He will fail miserably. He will of course start with ‘tax the rich’, which NYC ALREADY does. Each individual multimillionaire or billionaire has a breaking point, where they will (technically) leave the city for untaxed pastures. More fees for businesses next. Until they leave too.

How come Florida can not have an income tax at all and still provide services to its massive population? It’s not like real estate taxes are higher here. Nor are sales taxes. No inheritance tax here either. Seems like it is needed to pay for the literally millions of New Yorkers on the dole .

It’s a CITY. TWELVE BILLION is a lot.

Because FLA has high consumption taxes, which are regressive and impact lower income earners the most. That's why. And I am willing to bet that FLA has less social services than CA, NY, MA and others.

Florida's consumption tax (sales tax) is 6%.

6.25%-7% in MA.

8.75% in NYC.

Sales taxes are higher in NY and Mass than Florida. It can vary by municipality, but overall much higher in NY and slightly higher in Mass. ‘Social services’ is a broad term. Of course NY has more people on the dole and dependent on government assistance than Florida. You put up a sign saying ‘free shit here’ and people who take ‘free shit’ tend to accumulate. Especially those here illegally.

Mamdani will not be shy about being more than happy to support any illegal alien in his domain. Keeping the rich people there to fund his mission will be his challenge.

If giving away "free shit" is the cost of being one of the best states to live in the country, as a MA resident, I say give away even more. MA is a nice state, and nice things cost money.

Interesting. If it’s such a good state to live in why do 5 times as many Massachusetts residents move to Florida as Floridians who move to Massachusetts? And that’s with Florida having more than 3 times the population of Massachusetts! Actually, if it weren’t for the illegal alien influx Massachusetts would actually have a shrinking population.

Fact. People from your state want to move to a better state. My (new) state!

Aren't you one of those crazy people who leave Florida to go to other beach locations?

Haven’t yet. This is only our second full winter down here. It’s not Buffalo, but it does get cold. There is frost on the ground now. Golf delayed until 10am! And my AP says it will only be 49 by then.

I think it is more the specific lifestyle The Villages offers as opposed to overall Florida that attracted me here. Winter weather is not dependable, but I’ve had weeks in the 70’s every day. Golf either discounted or included in generally low monthly HOA charges. Pools/pickleball/bocce/softball/clubs/entertainment all a golf cart ride away. Dining/services all reasonable and close by. And you are living with generally like minded people, who just want to enjoy life. And I’m not talking politically. I have a few new friends here who hate Trump, but do not suffer from TDS. And a few who are MAGA that are ‘in his cult’. The MAGA ones NEVER discuss politics around me and my wife because they know how upset she is at having Trump as President.

Anyway, there is a decent chance next winter we do go to a Caribbean island. Our issue is our cute Parti Yorkie. We have found a neighbor who watches dogs in her house for $30 a day. I’ve seen how good she is with the various dogs she walks, and we had her watch ours as a test for two nights. When I go back to Buffalo in a few weeks to meet my new grandson she’ll be watching him for 5 days. If all goes well we may try a week next winter.
