Juneteenth

People are still enslaved, brutally in many parts of the world. Nobody thinks about it, but even some of our so called allies in the middle east have effectively slavery (if called a slightly nicer name.)

Look at what is going on with UAE and Saudi Arabia, do they truly have better human rights records than Iran? (They certainly have more slaves than Iran.) Yet they are our best friends, while Iran is the worst regime in the world?

I would be completely okay with a different history if there wasn't slavery in the New World. With the untapped resources and lands, we would have been just fine. Just like we are now.

History is history and it doesn't matter worth a hoot whether or not you happen to "be okay" with it.

I planned a work trip to Atlanta this week not realizing that Friday was Juneteenth. It cost me close to $300 to change my flight home from Friday to Thursday.

That's how the world worked back then: you might want to look into it...it's called "history."

Slavery helped build the wealth of the west and enabled so-called "western Christian civilization" to be exported to and succeed in the New World.

You might think of it as one of three ingredients which led to America's growth and ascent: slavery, immigration, untapped resources: the trifecta.

Slavery build lots of civilizations before that. What is crazy is how lots of posters here seem to think blacks being enslaved was when slavery was invented. After slavery ended we had company towns where you were free but really not so much.

Absurd. That is like the dramatic/lazy Genz people that now go around work saying that an office job is the same as being a slave. If you work in a company town, you chose to apply and move there, nobody is birthed being owned by Ford and not allowed to leave the company town.

If you can walk off your job without being killed or hunted for the rest of your life, you are not the slave. Really the only modern U.S. job where you can be killed and hunted for being a criminal for walking off is the military. But, even this would realistically not actually happen in the modern world (but theoretically could depending on context.)

Sure some jobs suck more than others, but if you can walk off at anytime with no physical risk, you are not a slave.

I think you need to learn how company towns worked. It was just an easier form of slavery.

there is a parallel with companies that seek cheap labor and slavery. It's the same motive for sure

Being a serf or an indentured servant, as most Europeans once were, was tantamount to slavery.
