I

I can't say when they'll pay it off: most Americans aren't able to pay off their credit card debt monthly so they carry a balance, ergo "I owe, I owe..."

Sadly, that is just an indictment of stupid people. If people are stupid enough to buy things on credit cards and not pay it off at the end of the month, theyget what they deserve. We need to educate people better so they don't do stupid things.

We can try. But you can’t fix stupid. Add to the list people buying nicer cars than they can afford.

Well, what about massive abuse of the financial system possibly driving us into recession? Do the rest of us, have to put up with that as well?

When people complain about things like that or politics, I always ask the same question. "What have you personally done to try to remedy the situation?" Generally the answers border on absolutely nothing. My thought is always if most people that complain spend as much time on solving the problem as they do discussing and complaining about it things might change.

I always make the most powerful move possible every election: i cast my vote.

That's enough for me.

Although your vote is important, it is not that effective in changing the outcome of an election. A person that convinces two others to change their vote is 200% more effective than your vote.

Thanks for nothing, Trump.

Are you now going to thank Trump for your 14+% increase in the 9 months since you posted this? That’s ALL been during the implementation of Trump policies/tariffs/boat bombings/name callings/etc…. ? Trump owns all of it. I’ll take 14% over 9 months any day, all day.

I took a $3600 hit today on a Fidelity contrafund account: why should I be thankful?

Wow, you sure are a savvy and knowledgeable investor.

I am guessing that you own approx 3,500 shares of Fidelity Contrafund (FCNTX). Today that mutual fund was down $1.03 at closing.

You do understand and know that today, Dec 5, was the “ex-dividend date” for the fund, don’t you??? The dividend (long term capital gain) for the fund is $1.09 per share. You do know that on the “ex-dividend date”, the value of the share automatically loses an amount per share equal to the dividend?

So since at the fund’s closing today it was down $1.03 per share, the fund’s price actually increased by $.06 per share.

So actually, assuming you own 3,500 shares, your Contrafund actually made you approx $210 today.

P.S. On Dec 8 you will get back the $3600 since it is the "pay date" for the distribution.

This may help

Hey thanks Flea...I'd inherited that bit of stock and never bothered to look into it too deeply: no idea about it being the ex-dividend date.

Hmmm...this mischief is probably afoot in some of my other investments.

Thanks again...
