I'm kind of burn out on the survival show "Naked and Afraid" where they drop people in the middle of nowhere with basically nothing. If you can't find food or water you get defeated. If you can't stay warm you get defeated. If you can't stand hundreds of biting bugs all night you get defeated. If you can't avoid food poisons or viral infections, you get defeated. If you can't survive routinely starving more and more each day, you get defeated. If you get injured and infected, you get defeated.

All kinds of ways to fail on this show. You don't need challenges like Survivor, because the whole thing is a challenge.

I've decided after watching it, the one thing I really want if I'm stuck out in such a situation (and it's not something they give you on the show)

After watching even experienced people trying to make fire, I'd want a damn magnifying glass even before a knife. If I had only one thing, besides a communication device to call for help it would be that

Even then you'd long for a sunny day. I like the idea many people decided was best in days of old, and that was to carry around tinder in a container that kept it dry, plus something that would make a spark. True tinder will start burning from a spark, and is not the same thing as kindling [a pet peeve for me is to have someone interchange the terms]

Here’s an actual case of the difficulties they encounter and with making fire. First when they’re dropped off, they have to find their partner. They always have at least one. Then they get a map with a general location to set up camp. They always have to hike for at least 2-3 hours to reach their designated area watching for snakes, and walking barefoot on anything from hot sand, to oystershell like rock, often with barbed thorns and spear grass stabbing them. Often in the hot sun without water. Once there, (still no food or water usually) regardless of a warm day, it’s usually going to be cold at night and they have to make a shelter. So they cut down anything they can to make a lean-to. And they worry about gettting a fire. And it may be raining the whole time, or everything is soaked and won’t burn easily anyway. That’s just the first day.

So one couple gets their fire going the second day. They spent most of day cutting or gather wood to burn that night. Thing is, after about two days, the amount of distance they have to go to find more wood gets lengthier and lengthier consuming even more time and calories, which if they are lucky they might be living on some berries, termites, or some horrible but edible plant. Their plight of wood supplies just kept getting worse. They never did get ahead of it and they eventually tapped out.

I really don't like "reality tv" but have attempted to watch "survival" types of the better quality. Even those are suspect as far as possible probable scripted/made-up stuff. I tend to forgive if they give some good tips and techniques. Such shows are disappearing except for this one, which frankly seemed to me to be about having exhibitionist-type nudists have their own show . Can't watch it

You can see more cleavage on the beach than this show. Actually, you can see more on the street. They blur everything but butt.

question for tonight's likely event

>>>

Can tomatoes handle a light frost?

Protecting Your Tomatoes from Early Frost - Our Stoney Acres
Tomato plants can survive temperatures as low as 33 degrees, but they cannot handle a freeze or frost. Freezing temperatures will kill your tomato plants right away! In fact, once you start to see night-time temperatures consistently below 50 degrees you will start to see problems with your tomato plants.

I have not watched any of the dramatic reality style shows (Survivor, Big Brother, etc). To me, the first reality show on TV was COPS.

A funny story. Back in the 1990's I was designing some casino games and was talking to a guy that goes by the moniker The Wizard of Odds. At the time I was living in Las Vegas and he was living in Maryland. We were trying to coordinate a time for both of us to meet. We were going through our schedules comparing dates when we would be home or travelling. We picked a few dates where each of us kept saying No, No, No. Then one date we mentioned Wizard said no because he had a meeting in Toronto that week. Surprisingly, I also had a meeting in Toronto that week, Perfect, we set a dinner meeting for a particular night in Toronto. We are both in Toronto and I get a call from the Wizard telling me he had to cancel our meeting for the following night. I assumed he must have another business commitment or something pretty important to cancel this meeting we had been trying to schedule for quite a while.

No, he cancelled on me because he realized it was the season finale of some first year show called "Survivor". I was not happy that he was cancelling for some tv show that I have never heard of after all of the planning for the meet up. To his credit, he made some time for me the next morning for a breakfast meeting and even presented me with a preliminary draft of a book he was writing.

I don't remember what year that was but I would guess 1998 or so. I can say that I have known the Wizard for 25 years now.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Wife says I'm muttering to myself a lot, but I think it's no worse than any other time in my life except I stifle it less

>>>

Is it bad to mutter to yourself?

For most people, talking to yourself is a normal behavior that is not a symptom of a mental health condition. Self-talk may have some benefits, especially in improving performance in visual search tasks. [medicalnewstoday.com]

OR

Some people feel that self-talk creates a “presence” around them that makes them feel better. This can help with loneliness. But in some cases, when people talk to themselves in an erratic or muttering way, it could indicate a mental health disorder [webmd]
