With a republican congress and USSC we might see changes coming which modify the type of "due process" required when trying to root out and expel illegal aliens, especially given Trump's E.O. saying it's a "national emergency."

Congress might, for example, enact a law specifically allowing stopping and questioning based solely on profiling, and the USSC would OK it on appeal.

Perhaps we'll be required to carry and display ID on demand, including our SSN.

There are many things possible along those lines, all arguably appropriate given the declared "national emergency."

I'd like to see the administration defend the national emergency declaration with facts and a legal argument.

The US isn't at war. We are not under threat of invasion from foreign military forces. Our economy is prosperous. Crime is lowering by objective measure and continues to drop. Other than Jan 6, 2021 we are not under threat of insurrection rebellion or civil war. All of these factors work against suspending civil liberties.

It will be a dark day if SCOTUS allows any LE entity to stop any person or persons and demand that we show them our papers without evidence of criminality. And no, having brown skin isn't enough evidence of criminality.

Alarmed by the anti-immigant and casually racist rhetoric from Trump 1.0, since 2017 I made as part of my EDC (1)My state DL, now upgraded to a Real ID (2)My US Passport Card (3)A miniaturized copy of my birth certificate showing US birth and (4)A copy of my SS card. I advise all US citizens to do the same to protect yourself against the heavy handed enforcement actions of LE. I advise all lawful immigrants to carry at all times equivalent relevant documents to show lawful presence in the US. I offer no advice to those not present in the US lawfully out of concern for criminal prosecution for aiding and abetting.

Lawful immigrants should always carry papers, other western nations make them do the same. When I looked at teaching English in Japan that was something they informed you of, carry it always, even if you were just taking out the trash.

But nothing racist about Trump. Didn't you see he just signed an EO prohibiting special considerations based on race or sex?

Having been to Japan twice, and in all my travels international, despite carrying my passport and visa, I was never asked for papers while about town. That being said, the US should not look at those that don't look like "us" with suspicion. We should not be made to live in a state of such angst that we feel compelled to carry our papers, in terror.

That same revoked order also prohibited federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin. A true non racist would've left those provisions in.

Trump had yet another press conference today and yep, he mentioned that the 2020 election was rigged and stolen. He mentions it every single day because he should. Never let people forget it. There's a reason the January 6th committee got rid of every bit of information that they uncovered in their investigations because it all pointed to the election being stolen. This is why they got pardons from Captain Poopypants, because what they did is criminal destroying all that information.

The NSA likely has the evidence.

But Trump is in a position to do something about it and Hillary and Al Gore never were. Trump never forgets who wrongs him and he holds a grudge for decades. You call it being a sore loser, he calls it getting even. Never forget he's a native New Yorker, you screw them over they don't forget.
