As soon as the indictment actually happens, the judge will put a gag order into place preventing him from tweeting such threats.

If he is indicted and the judge imposes a gag order and he violates it, you know what happens?

He gets put in jail.

That is probably the main reason for the whole thing. Give them the an excuse to censor Trump and keep him from campaigning.

The issue with Trump making those kinds of posts (besides being despicable and threats on their own), is his followers. He knows that his followers will engage in insurrections, so he certainly has followers that will carry out his "hit list" making posts with a person he is trashing while holding a baseball bat over is obviously a call to violence. Yes, Trump is not going to attack him with a baseball bat (he probably is too out of shape to swing one), but he knows that he has followers that will. And, the more people he scares away from taking action, the more of a win it is for him.

In organized crime cases, gag orders can be used to prevent such orders of violence, this is no different. It is very easy for crime bosses to give orders to kill without explicitly saying it. This is one of many reasons for such powers. While technically it is a form of censorship, it is a necessary one in criminal matters.

It’s not even remotely appropriate for the office he’s seeking or held before.

Oh, I fully agree. But, it is beyond inappropriate (Trump has not been remotely appropriate as a person his whole adult life). It is illegal and a blatant call to violence against individual targets. Will Trump be held accountable? Who knows.... I hope so.
