Expect to hear LOTS of stories like this in the next 11 months.

Terrible!! People should have to ask permission from the court to have a baby, not to abort one.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Honestly, a good idea.

Honestly, if people who wanted to give birth had to go through the same process that people who want to adopt have to go through before being approved, the world would be an empirically better place. I know this (your comment) is sarcasm, but it is a genuinely good idea.

Not sarcasm, people should have to prove that they are responsible enough and financially capable of raising a child.

The TX Supreme Court has ruled against the woman seeking the abortion. (Not that it matters at this point, she’s getting the abortion elsewhere).

Almost as if all these Republicans are trying to help out the Dems…

Only the folks that weren't aborted support abortion.

Trisomy 18 diagnosis:

The first source is the court document.

The second is a post by a ZH member after reading the ZH article.

Supreme Court of Texas
.

.
In this case, the pleadings state that Ms. Cox’s doctor—Dr. Damla
Karsan—believes Ms. Cox qualifies for an abortion based on the
medical-necessity exception. But when she sued seeking a court’s
pre-authorization, Dr. Karsan did not assert that Ms. Cox has a
“life-threatening physical condition” or that, in Dr. Karsan’s reasonable
medical judgment, an abortion is necessary because Ms. Cox has the
type of condition the exception requires. No one disputes that Ms. Cox’s
pregnancy has been extremely complicated. Any parents would be
devastated to learn of their unborn child’s trisomy 18 diagnosis. Some
difficulties in pregnancy, however, even serious ones, do not pose the
heightened risks to the mother the exception encompasses. The
exception requires a doctor to decide whether Ms. Cox’s difficulties pose
such risks. Dr. Karsan asked a court to pre-authorize the abortion yet
she could not, or at least did not, attest to the court that Ms. Cox’s
condition poses the risks the exception requires.

Mother Of Doomed Fetus Flees Texas For Abortion As State Supremes Rule Against Her

DEC 11, 2023

My son was born with a congenital heart defect, tetralogy of falot

One kidney and scoliosis , they discovered this before he was born on an ultrasound

They showed us the image of him , and told us it was a boy , i was happy , for a few minutes, until the ultrasound technician started making frantic calls to get a hold of a doctor, then rushed out of the room

We were told to go upstairs to a specialists office immediately

He told us about the issues , but explained that they couldn't be certain until they looked with a more elaborate ultrasound machine at a hospital in Toronto

After several appointments over a month or so , we were in a room with a doctor, an obvious homosexual

He curtly explained that all these symptoms combined were most likely signs of an underlying genetic condition, Degeorges syndrome .

That appointment was on a Friday, he told us that given the stage of the pregnancy we had until Tuesday at the latest to decide whether or not to abort him , after that point he said it wouldn't be an option

We drove home in painful silence , agonizing silence

We decided to opt for further genetic testing, which came back negative for any genetic conditions, the doctor at that appointment explained that we were right to do so , and that the extra week wouldn't have made a difference if we'd decided to abort , that man tried to scare us into aborting a child without a second thought

My son turns 6 soon , to look at him he seems perfect

To me , he is

I was doing a neonatal ICU rotation when there was a trisomy 18 birth. The baby died soon after birth. I have one specific lifelong memory of the event. The supervising physician said we should honor the life of that baby by learning as much as we could that might help a future baby under our care. That the baby’s short life would have some meaning.

About this specific case…. if I have any direct involvement with the mother, the instance a Texas judge in any way interferes with the planned abortion, I advise my spouse/relative/friend/colleague to go where there is no legal obstruction. If money is an issue there are probably thousands of sources that would pay for it.

Unless the mother is more interested in making a political point than actually effectuating the abortion.

If abortion/abortion rights are important to you, don’t stay in Texas, and certainly don’t move there.

I read the 31 year old mother had two children already.

I don't know if they are healthy.

In the USA, trisomy 18 has about a 1 in 2500 probability.

There are three types, with different magnitudes of seriousness.

There are triplicates of chromosome 18, in either the mother or the father, at least in the worst magnitude.

What I got out of the data I quickly viewed, was that the probability increases (more likely) with the age of the mother.

And there's about a 1% miscarriage chance to do advanced genetic testing to be able to make a decision better.

They've passed laws to try to sue anyone who helps a woman leave the state. I would suspect that covers people offering money to leave the state. It also doesn't address all kinds of time factors, such as whether a woman will have an available appointment in another state if the clinics are overbooked. Then there's the 15-year-old who doesn't even know she's pregnant getting in too late. And just other women general , (like obese women) who may not even realize they are pregnant. Everyone well-educated, well-funded, never had any real problems. And probably still won't. But there are others that do.
