Dozens of countries offer a digital nomad visa, sometimes referred to as a remote working visa. It’s a way to live in a foreign country for a stretch, usually somewhere between six months and two years, as long as you prove you’re earning a sufficient income through remote work.

Before 2020, only about a half-dozen nations (pioneered by Estonia) offered some variation of this visa. But now more than 50 nations do, thanks to the spread of high-speed internet and the pandemic’s remote-work legacy.

While a digital nomad visa can open a world of adventure, you need to follow the rules — both those of the United States (namely, taxes) and of your destination country. It also involves number-crunching and long-term personal finance planning. But after the legwork, it can be rewarding — and even affordable.

Here’s what you need to know if you want to become a digital nomad.

Retired teacher plans to live on a cruise ship for the next 15 years, says it’s still cheaper than California

She purchased a “residential” cabin with an estimated lifespan of 15 years. She pays an additional $3000 month;ly for all services, food cleaning and the entertainment I believe as well.

I’m not sure how much you’d have to pay me to live on a cruise ship for the next 15 years, but you don’t have that much money! I love travel, and can see going on multiple cruises…. But get me back to land!

To the best of my knowledge, I actually don’t know a single person who retired to overseas.

Retiring TO overseas I can see, and understand. Heck, find me a nice place in Italy and you most likely will never ever see me step foot in North America again.

Retiring ON the seas? Non grazie!

One thing to keep in mind when deciding where to retire is availability and quality of health care.

I'm glad I'm in Portland as the health care quality and availability here is excellent: not sure how it would be elsewhere, but I'm sure it's fine in some places.

But then how to pay for a medical procedure out of the country?

If you'e on Medicare or Medicaid there is typically no coverage; no idea about private health insureance except you'd want to get it in the country you live in.

I hear things are much cheaper south of the border.

I feel like Costa Rica would be nice (popular retirement nation, and close enough to U.S. it's easy to fly back.) Belize would be similar and English speaking as a perk.

I feel like there are some African countries that get overlooked, but I don't know enough about obscure (to me) countries in Africa. But, there are probably some solid countries with a nice climate.

Middle East I would skip, Asia could be nice, but too far and some areas too questionable. Europe I would only do Spain or Portugal.

New Zealand seems nice (never been there,) but also very far.

Belize remains on my list, though I expect to die before I can really retire. I want to visit at the least, but I know I have to find my own kind of thing to do. I found you can see small-scale chocolate production, which is a start.

I am making my first trip to Italy in September. Most of my time will be on a beach in Sardinia so I won't be seeing much of the country. We found what appears to be a nice seaside house with a pool for three weeks. My wives will be doing more tourism as I stay at the beach house for most of the trip

I have only been to San Jose Costa Rica and you couldn't pay me enough to be in that city. I was there two days and that was more than enough for me.

With a couple of wives you'll need plenty of oysters to go the distance, but I'm sure you already know that.
