They were called campgrounds then, not RV parks. It was a great read because he made up 95% of the characters. His wife would fly in on weekends and they would see shows and eat at expensive restaurants. Steinbeck was always a phony. He spewed the commie line but lived the high life on his book money.
I read it twice, how did I miss it. Pure commie propaganda, a Marxist manifesto. The Associated Farmers of California dismissed the novel as a "pack of lies" and "communist propaganda". I didn't even finish it the 2nd time, it was making me ill. Soooo melodramatic, so full of pathos and so full of itself. If you take a risk, you may lose. There have been auto campgrounds since the 20's. People turned Model T's into RV's. I never heard the word 'recreational vehicle' till the 70's. They were called campers and trailers and motor homes and 5th wheels. The old RV parks were called trailer parks, but mostly they were called campgrounds. If you take a risk, you may lose. Steinbeck was barely into his 30's when he wrote it. Idealistic as hell, the commies were big on recruiting writers and actors. Joe McCarthy is vilified for his commie hunts in the 50's, but it needed to be done. They had infiltrated the whole entertainment industry and had to go. He just got carried away with it.
