Not just media articles, but in the Presidential debate they referred to the US having "one of the worst death rate in the developed world". It's a distracting way to characterize the situation, as there is no significant variance between the COVID death rates of the US, Italy, Spain, France and Britain. 0.168% Belgium (may be reporting standards) 0.124% Italy 0.109% Czechia 0.109% UK 0.109% Spain 0.107% USA 0.102% Liechtenstein 0.100% Hungary 0.099% France 0.097% Mexico 0.095% Argentina 0.093% Panama 0.092% Brazil 0.088% Switzerland |

The Bloomberg article omits demographics and obesity as contributing factors in the number of deaths. The combined populations of France, Italy, Spain, UK, Germany, Sweden, and Belgium is nearly the same as the US population. Those nations have seen 326K Covid deaths, compared to 354K in the US. 36% of the U.S. population is obese, versus 23% for those nations. "They found that people with obesity who contracted SARS-CoV-2 were 113% more likely than people of healthy weight to land in the hospital, 74% more likely to be admitted to an ICU, and 48% more likely to die.” The rate of obesity in the US is 64% higher than it is in those nations. The US has a large Black, Hispanic and Native American population. 48% of Blacks and Latinos are clinically obese. 33% of all native Americans are obese. Those groups are dying at rates higher than their percent of the population. Whites and Asians are dying at rates lower than their percent of the population. |

That does not change the overall death rate if you are just looking at total COVID-19 deaths in a country. When Covid-19 started people blamed the high numbers in Italy based on its high smoking rates (while true), does not negate the numbers when looking at the impact on a country.... |

Some countries have a death rate only a small percentage of the US. No one single explanation can come close to explaining the difference. Not rich nor poor, crowded cities or mostly urban, not even European or non European 39% Canada 38% Germany 23% Turkey ... 7.87% Philippines 7.58% Indonesia 3.28% Australia 1.97% Haiti 1.69% S. Korea 0.47% New Zealand 0.28% China 0.08% Thailand 0.04% Vietnam 0.03% Taiwan |

Pacomartin Member since: Oct 24, 2012 Threads: 1068 Posts: 12569 | The number of cases is going way up, but a smaller percentage are dying. COVID deaths / cases = death rate 183,809 / 6,019,494 =3.05% | from beginning of COVID (1 January 2020) through end of August 84,356 / 7,588,371 = 1.11% | Sept - November 2020 (3 months) 77,572 / 6,360,221 = 1.22% | December 2020 |
