CDC says 94% of ALL Americans who have died of COVID-19 had at least one other underlying disease.

Only 6% of the death certificates had Covid alone as the cause of death.

Well yea
Most people are overall healthy but have some underlying condition
Like myself
If I get covid and die
I'm sure my life long asthma would be documented with covid as a cause of death

On the flip side most of those in the study with asthma were younger then me
I'm 61 with asthma, not a kid.

The problem with death TP is we can do nothing about the IF and much less than we think we can about the WHEN. One of the best things about getting older is eventually you will relax and accept your own mortality.

AZ..... just because someone has a pre-existing condition..... does not mean they were going to die.... of the 170,000 that died...... you honestly believe 150,000 would have died anyway?????/ Stop being obtuse.....

Remember, if 170,000 died.... there may be 10,000,000 or so that had it and didn't..... but the death toll IS the death toll........

I have said the real 'impact' is number of life-years lost. The life expectancy of people who died before they contracted COVID-19. I think that is what you are getting at, and I agree with you that is what over states the severity of the disease as far as societal impact goes. If it killed 20 in a nursing home that each had an average life expectancy of 3 years, that is similar to a single bicycle accident that kills a 25 year old.

I didn’t really understand what you meant in the last paragraph so this isn’t a rebuttal, just my thoughts on all of this.

You gotta die somehow. I am obviously shooting from the hip with these numbers, but I would think that something like 75% of Coronavirus victims would have died in the next year of something else, 85% in the next 3 years, 95% in the next 5 years...etc

I could be way off with that. And I am not not saying that those lost years don’t matter, that old people should be sacrificial lambs, etc. But by taking drastic measures like lockdowns, you are leaving younger generations with years or possibly a decade of economic impacts to save a group who maybe had a solid year left of shuffleboard, and then become bed ridden and die of heart disease.

I’m fine with masks where feasible and aggressive mitigation up to the point where you tell business and people they can’t work, or have to operate at a capacity where they are not profitable.

In fact, I think it's pretty damn selfish for people to throw the younger generation under the bus like that.....

Yeah, what's next, cutting taxes without cutting spending, saddling future generations with endless debt?

As someone in their 70's I pretty much agree with your whole post. I have compared the pandemic many times in discussions to a war. In this war however the old people are the ones that are dying on the front lines instead of the usual young men. This is fine with most of my cohort if that is what it takes to preserve the world we know for our kids and grandkids. The following line has been used a lot about climate change "You are mortgaging our kids future". It is just if not more applicable to the shutdowns for Covid.

I think for those of us with kids, once I knew they are able to succeed without my help, it certainly helped me accept my own mortality. I'm 60 and hope to have another good decade or two, but if I don't, I am prepared. I am hoping for the vaccine, so others who are in fear and unable to enjoy life now, can turn it around.

Funny you say that because I was just talking to a friend who's 78, and he said the same exact thing.

He's very high risk, but he doesn't feel that his kids and grandkids should have their lives upended just because of people his age. One of his granddaughters couldn't even go to her high school prom, and he said that broke his heart since she'll never get that chance again. Another granddaughter of his got married, but she couldn't have the big wedding she and her husband wanted.

Greedy ass libbies don't give a rat's ass about these things though!! 👿

I concur with that. When you have kids they are really the only thing that matters until they are self sufficient.
At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent.
