My wife and I went to the pub for a couple of beers yesterday. We had dinner at a restaurant after the beers and the place was full. Not a mask in site at either place, staff or patrons. It has been that way since they opened 6 weeks ago and no spike in cases.

Yes we have had only 187 total deaths less than 20 in the last couple of weeks. The majority are elderly in care facilities. About the only things not open are casinos and sports. Gyms and movie theatres are open, any store that wants can open. People waiting in lines are generally practicing social distancing and most cashiers usually have plastic barriers. Full service in the bars and servers are generally not wearing any protection. I think this just means that we don't understand this disease as well as the 'experts' claim they do.

BC still has it's borders closed to none Canadians unless they agree to self isolate for 2 weeks. This is really hammering the tourism business' and probably over 50% won't survive. Many hotels still not open just not enough business to make it worthwhile.

I'm actually waiting for the deplorables to start ridiculing him for wearing a mask and cowering under pressure. Not exactly what the strong man would do, to succumb to outside pressures of the "leftist media".

But of course, they won't do that.

And I’m pretty sure any protestor or rioter in close proximity to an infected person for long enough got it.

Also sure the reduced deaths vs higher numbers is due to better treatments.

The data you're referencing is almost a month old. Come on man. Nevertheless, the gist of your article suggests to me that there's definitely a chance that protests led to more cases, but that evidence was still coming in, on June 24th, 2.5 weeks ago. The evidence and data is STILL coming in.

However, the authors said that while there was little effect on the spread of COVID-19 for counties as a whole, it’s possible that the protests caused an increase in the spread of COVID-19 among those who actually attended the protests.

"It's certainly possible that there is probably a small increase in cases among the protesting population," Dhaval Dave, an economics professor at Bentley University and one of the authors of the paper, said. But "when we look at the population of the counties as a net, there does not seem to have been significant community spread and no significant increase at all in overall cases at the population level."

"I think that some of us were concerned that there could be a spike in cases," Dr. Carlos Del Rio, chair of the department of global health at Emory University, said. On the other hand, he observed many protests where people were wearing masks and being careful.

Del Rio, who was not involved with the new research, echoed the paper’s conclusions. In Atlanta, he said, "a lot of people were not going anywhere because they were afraid of getting stuck into protests or being stopped by police."

It may be too early to tell if demonstrations have had an impact on the spread of the virus. In an interview with JAMA in early June, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said that it takes a minimum of three weeks for a behavioral change — such as shifting away from social distancing to large mass gatherings — to cause an increase in infection rates.

Still, cities are optimistic that case counts will not dramatically increase like many feared after the protests began.

“We’ve not seen any evidence that the number of new cases identified in Philadelphia is associated with any protest activities,” the city's Department of Health said in a statement to NBC News. “The daily numbers aren’t dropping as quickly as they have in the past few weeks, which is concerning, but we can’t tie that to protests, other summer activities, or anything else in particular.”

In New York City, health officials have not seen a recent spike in emergency room visits or hospitalizations, according to a statement from Dr. Oxiris Barbot, the city’s health commissioner. Still, she added: "Staying inside is the safest way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If you do go out, our message is to wear face coverings; be diligent about washing hands; and certainly, when at all possible, maintain 6 feet of distance from your fellow New Yorkers.”

In Minneapolis, one of the largest medical groups in the area, Health Partners, said that just 1 percent of nearly 10,000 protesters had tested positive for the virus. Similar rates were seen in Seattle this month, when city officials said that less than 1 percent of 3,000 protesters had tested positive for COVID-19.
