I've never seen the original Mary Poppins. Don't really care to see this one (it's 2 hours 10 mins, that seems loooooong for this type of movie). But I do like Emily Blunt.

Oh, my, ams. You are genuinely missing out. Mary Poppins the original holds up beautifully today. So much tart and snappy dialogue. Really funny in a dozen or more spots, adult jokes over the head of kids but not hurting them.

Wonderful songs so well staged. Very self-aware mocking of nearly every stereotype, set in the 1910s in London, many magical effects very well done long before CGI.

Deserves at least 9 umbrellas out of 10 for soaring journey taken by at least 5 characters. If a half-umbrella wasn't a broken umbrella, it would get 9.5. Drags just a touch in a couple of places (it was long, too) or it would be a full-on 10 from me.

I'm genuinely excited to see this. Advance word is very good. But you likely MUST see the original first.

It's difficult to imagine that someone has not seen Mary Poppins.

I never saw it
I remember as a kid, friends and teachers talking about it
I was in 1st or 2nd grade when it came out and didn't have a clue what everybody was talking about
My parents were extremely frugal back then.
I had more interest in Batman instead as a kid

Egads! Two people haven't seen it? It's supercalafragalisticexpialadocious!

I think it was the first feature film to blend live action with animation. It is a must see.

I didn't read the books, but I understand the character in the book was actually kind of dark.

Yeah, no. Never seen more than bits
and pieces of it, it's cornball deluxe.
Too much singing and dancing
with stupid lyrics, too much of Dick
Van Dykes truly horrible Cockney
accent. Way too long and will bore
you out of your mind. Horrible bullying
father figure, pathetic mother and
unattractive, annoying children.

Oh, and Van Dyke has a terrible singing
voice. One of the stupidest Disney movies
ever made. Julie Andrews starred in
Sound of Music a year later, which was
a truly wonderful movie. Van Dyke did
Shitty Shitty Bang Bang a few years later,
which is actually worse than Poppins.
