Impeachment, alas, is a political process, not a judicial one.

Essentially, the House of Representatives acts as the prosecutor and votes whether or not to bring charges in a bill of impeachment. Then the trial is held in the Senate, with the Chief Justice presiding and the senators acting as the jury.

We all now this, the basics at least. But what are the implications?

Foremost is that it's a political process. You can bring up impeachment for political reasons, rather than judicial ones. Conversely, senators can vote to acquit for political reasons as well. This means unless you can get 2/3 of the senators to convict, your case doesn't really make much of a difference. Juries do weigh evidence and testimony, but ultimately issue a decision based on law (as instructed by the judge). They have no latitude to vote guilty or not guilty based on their feelings towards the defendant, and usually have no personal or professional stakes in the matter. They can't even consider the fairness of the law involved.

Golden Boy Trump has been accused in the media (not by the media, BTW) of obstruction of justice. This is a very serious charge, regardless of whether his campaign colluded with Russia or not. Given the evidence we know, I've no doubt Trump would be mincemeat for any competent prosecutor at a regular court of law.

It is his luck, and our misfortune, that he cannot be tried in court by a jury.

So they key right now is his supporters, whether they voted for him or not. If he can keep them, most of the cowards in the GOP won't dare touch him. If he loses enough of his support, though, he will fall hard enough to leave a crater in the Rose Garden.

However things play out, and that will take time, it's likely no moves towards impeachment will take place until after the midterm elections (barring some incredibly outrageous act by the Golden Boy, which isn't unlikely at all). Even then, a conviction is far from certain. Nixon resigned because he'd become so unpopular even among his base, that few would dare defend him if impeached.

I've no doubt Golden Boy can produce an endless stream of scandals. For the moment, too, I've no doubt he could kill, skin, butcher, cook and eat a puppy, and his supporters wouldn't be put off, until some "liberal," elite publications declared Trump to be cruel to animals.

Well, that's how things stand now.

I, for one, as a student of history, would like to be able to see the US depose a president for the first time in its history.

Here's what happens when a party impeaches
it's own president out of office. You tell all
the voters who put him there 'screw you!'
You cut your own throat politically for the
next couple of elections. That's why all of
this impeachment talk is silly.

There have been no crimes committed by
Trump, none. So there is zero grounds
for a criminal impeachment. Alan
Dershowitz, no Trump fan for sure, says
this is all lunacy and hysteria from the
Left. He says over and over there is no
grounds for impeachment nor will there
be. It's just CNN and MS selling soap
commercials to the cry baby Hillary
supporters.

So Dershowitz can predict the future
Do you have a link to a quote including "nor will there be"
Serms pretty stupid to predict results of future investigations.
If Trump breaks the law in the future, he should be impeached.
Dershowitz cannot guarantee thst Trump will not break the law nor is he privy to investigations.

He would have to kill somebody for the
house and senate to impeach him. You
and your ilk seem to have little understanding
of how politics works. It's about the people
in office keeping the voters in THEIR PARTY
happy for the next election. Getting rid
of the guy THEY put in office is a sure
way to piss them off royally.

You're being duped by CNN and MS.
They know impeachment will never
happen but their stupid lemming
audience laps it up. Suckers..

Wapo and NYT are even further Left
than CNN and DT, it's where they
get all their stories from. I haven't
watched Fox in years, as you well
know. I did see O'reilly, some of it,
once in a great while. I watched it
some during the election. The only
Fox show I see is Greg Gutfeld on
Sat night because he's hilarious.
I see it on Utube commercial free.

They do real reporting. A lot of newscast stories begin with "The New York Times reported............" or "The Washington Post reported ........"
I never hear a newscast start with "Foxnews reported .................." They are not reporting, they are playing defense. Its fake news excuses.
Sean Hannity reported a baseless conspiracy theory about the murder of Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich.
Woops, Fox fake news

Your credibility is really sinking.
Its getting to the point of not believing any of your posts.

On Fox right now they have the best
eyewitness of all time at the event
in Manchester. He was right there
when the explosion was set off.
Hugely handsome young man, late
20's, charming accent, Tucker kept
him on for at least 15 min.

LOL! I watched all 3 cable networks
that night for coverage. That's why
I said it was heartbreaking for them
to have to stop the Trump Impeachment
Hearing for even 5min to report on
real news.

Sorry, buddy boy, I no longer and haven't
watched Fox except when something big
happens since the election ended, you'll
just have to live with that. I don't need
the news, Trump won and will be there
for at least 4 years, and Hillary lost. That's
all I need to know.

It might pay for the GOP to leak some numbers on how much money Golden Boy's businesses are taking in from foreigners, especially from foreign governments, through emoluments which are clearly forbidden in the Constitution.

This sounds like filler for the impeachment, which should focus on the much more serious issue of obstruction, but it might be key to crack his base. Especially if such payments can be tied to broken promises as regards trade and such.
