"the universe was infinitely big to begin with and continues to remain infinitely big as time goes on, so the universe's size doesn't change, and therefore it doesn't expand into anything" That's pretty much word for word what I said. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

From the article Ace posted: "the universe was infinitely big to begin with and continues to remain infinitely big as time goes on, so the universe's size doesn't change, and therefore it doesn't expand into anything" The article said we can scientifically discuss this. What we can't discuss with science is if the universe is finite. That's where religion comes it with it's wild stories that the universe is like a planetarium in a big bottle with some god outside it overseeing the whole thing. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

I also appreciated the many times the author mentioned that if talking about an edge of space or what the universe is "streching" into we are not talking about a scientific question. He also inadvertently showed the impossibility of an actual infinite. He admits it is very hard for us to think of infinity and the only way we can is with numbers. For some reason the author doesn't make the connection that the mathematical infinity cannot exist in real life for the very reasons he demonstrates in the article. How can you multiple real things and end up with the same number? “It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” ( |

From my understanding, we just don't know what exists past the known universe, as defined by the furthest extent of galaxies. I neither buy nor deny that space is infinite. It may be like a sphere, possible of more than three dimensions. If you draw a line on a sphere and just keep going, you never stop, but do loop around. These questions used to interest me more than they do know. At 53, I have about 30 years left, but I think I'll beat the averages. The older I get, the more I realize that I don't know. If it is unknowable, I don't really care that I don't know. Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

I don't really care either, I only have the discussion when I'm told some god created the universe we can see. This offends me no end, like I'm some ignorant uneducated gullible tribe member just waiting to be flim flammed.. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

This surprises me. The misdirected vigor you put into fighting for the belief that there is no God and the false attacks on God and religion even when not talking about creation doesn't give one the impression that you don't care. Why are you offended when someone claims God created the universe? Do you want us to believe that the universe just popped into existence without a cause? Do you want us to believe that an expanding material universe in motion is infinite and eternal? That offends me that you would think any of us so ignorant and gullible. “It is with the smallest brushes that the artist paints the most exquisitely beautiful pictures.” ( |

We've had this discussion a dozen times, I'm bored with it. Why not just enjoy converting the natives on Pango Pango or Bora Bora or whatever place you're at this summer.. My answers to your questions will be the same as they were last year or the year before. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Of course, that's a given. Then we pretended to hear from from him. There's a standard that historians use to judge stories from the past. If you can't prove it today, or it's not happening today, it wasn't happening in the past either, and is a legend or a myth. Nobody can walk on water now, nor could they 2000 years ago. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |
