"Delegating" (ie giving) a task to a subordinate is ok. making it solely the subordinate's problem is not ok.

Delegation of tasks is fine, but the responsibility of supervision remains yours. Some supervisors focus on inspection some focus on worker autnomy in scheduling and execution.

If a subordinate wants to move I they make the task solely their problem. People in the ranks that can't get things done stay in the ranks.

The odds of a person answering their phone (cell or office) are in reverse proportion of how urgently you need to talk to them.

Corollary: if you have three numbers for one person, odds are you'll need to dial all three before they answer.

Which probably took more of your time than simply sending them an email would have taken or leaving a voice mail would have taken.

Once about a time in the late 70's I thought I had a good idea. So did upper level management in my department at AT&T. This was my idea. I hate being on hold forever. The more important I need to speak to someone, the longer the wait.
It's built into call centers, then and now. Some bean counters decides that 90% of the people will wait 12 minutes before giving up. Or any such numbers. They staff that way.
My idea ? Offer an option to the caller. Press 3 for C&W music, 4 for Rock, 5 for local news, 6 for sports, etc. But once it got to the PBX people, I found out that option was already built into large PBX's. AT&T even had commitments in major cities to use broadcast radio stations, as long as the commercials remained in. But nobody used the feature.... EVER.
Probably due to NIH maybe ?? I still like the idea.

DILBERT cartoonist worked for AT&T also. So much of that is REAL. Never saw a beta trial fail, never.
