My guess is you are probably correct that ISIS didn't know anything about this man until it hit the papers. But they put out a general call to people in all the world to do this kind of attack. They know enough about human behavior to know that they can incite people with this rhetoric.

If your guess is that this event is not an organized attack against the USA by a operative trained in a foreign country, then I agree with you. The collateral victims sadly will be the 3 million plus Muslim Americans.

It is a certainty they didn't know about it. But as you say that matters not. It meets their goals. General violence against the enemy. General dusruption. Get more of the population to beg for more freedoms to be taken away. Not sure of the reports of left wing politicians rushing to blame gun violence are true or not but if they are then even better for ISIS if they did.

Even the San Bernadino "terrorist" who pledged allegiance to ISIS had to look up the leader on the computer several hours before doing so. It seems his motivation was more likely related to forced participation in a Christmas party.
