One of the most common open jaws I book is outbound IND-ORD-PEK. Return BOM-EWR-IND.

Open Jaws are very important if you are crossing oceans. Aeromexico's two major airports in Europe are Madrid and Paris, so I imagine people want to take the train from one city to another.

But in Mexico it is much easier to book an open-jaw or one way flights for domestic routes.

Truth is I've never taken a connecting flight in Mexico at all. Odds are I never will.

People who live in Chicago probably never take connecting flights, unless they are connecting in Asia.

O'Hare International Airport has approximately
1,106 daily direct flights to 157 U.S. cities and
132 daily direct flights to 58 international destinations.

Mexico City flies nonstop to 52 domestic and 50 international destinations.

I've connected outside Mexico. The last time was in 1990, MEX-MCO via Atlanta with Delta.

I have looked at going to Vegas via GDL and MTY. Invariably it's more expensive than the non-stop flight. Ditto for taking Delta via PHX, United via SFO, or American via DFW. And that's before adding fees.

I went to Great Falls Montana about 10 days ago and I did not see a direct flight. I ended up flying back to Las Vegas and taking the same Allegiant flight as my wife.

To a great extent outside of USA and China, most countries of the world have a single megacity where all the government, industry, and finance is concentrated. Mexico City airport, like Mexico City, dominates the network. MEX carries more passengers than the next three largest airports combined.

Millions of Air Passengers
38.43 Benito Juárez International Airport Distrito Federal Mexico City MEX
19.60 Cancún International Airport Quintana Roo Cancún CUN
9.76 Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla International Airport Jalisco Guadalajara GDL
8.46 General Mariano Escobedo International Airport Nuevo León Monterrey MTY

USA has 4 of the top 10 airports ranked by passengers (or 5 of top 15)

Millions of Air Passengers
101.49 Atlanta, Georgia ATL
89.94 Chaoyang-Shunyi, Beijing PEK
78.01 Garhoud, Dubai DXB
76.94 Chicago, Illinois ORD
75.32 Ōta, Tokyo HND
74.99 Hillingdon, London LHR
74.94 Los Angeles, California LAX
68.28 Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong HKG
65.77 Roissy-en-France, Île-de-France CDG

61.84 Yeşilköy, Istanbul IST

Of course the clients I book is a small niche market
but
I book a ton of people into Mexico but don't book these cities that much MEX, GDL AND MTY.
For my clients going to Mexico, 90% fly to SLP

Can you explain why so many go to SLP without giving out too much personal information? I wasn't even aware of that airport.

Good question. I'm not aware there's anything there. Maybe there's mining?

I recall driving through it on the way to/from Monterrey, but nothing more stuck in my memory.

Again, not something I've ever done or likely ever will do.

Though there was this one time I had to stay unexpectedly in MTY, and return flights to MEX on Interjet the next day were sold out. I wound up flying to TLC instead. I figured that was better than taking a turn on standby and winding up spending another night there.

Fortunately that one time I'd opted to take a cab to the airport. Otherwise it would have been a very long trip just to pick up my car.

My guess

Very small airport, less than half a million passengers per year. Probably expensive to fly to as all regional aircraft.
