UK rules Uber is a Transportation Company, NOT an "information Vendor". All drivers are employees, not independent contractors. Drivers are not actually able to 'dip into and out of' the job market.

Massachusetts adopts strict background check rules for Uber, Lyft drivers

Looks like the industry is maturing. MA probably sees it is too popular to kill it but wants to make it as or more secure than cabs.

I don't understand racism :-)

I do. So would you if you have to walk up Park heights Avenue after dark or many neighborhoods in Baltimore. Racism is a 2 way street.

Yes, one famous black radical said he was more scared of confronting a black man in an alley than a white man in an alley. A white man might hurl epithets or stones; a black man would be more likely to keep his mouth shut and just use a knife or a gun. It can be difficult.

This is common sense. Who wants to potentially hop in a car with a complete stranger who could be a convicted criminal? I actually began driving for them here in Australia at the start of October and the hoops needed to be jumped through to begin are similar - criminal record check before you can take the first step.

Does UBER carry insurance for the vehicles ? Drivers might lapse or have minimum coverage. I did read Uber beat a lawsuit for a deadly auto crash, saying the driver did not have a passenger, so they were not liable. Of course he was hauling ass back downtown for the next job.
Does anybody think a Taxi Cab company would claim the same, because the cab had no passenger ?

When Uber puts driver-less vehicles on the road, will they pay to retrain drivers for a new career field ?

They don't work for Uber, they work
for themselves. They're self employed
independent contractors, Uber is under
no obligation to do anything for them.

Independent contractors NOT. Read the rules for what feds say an independent contractor is .

A worker is an employee when the business has the right to direct and control the worker. The business does not have to actually direct or control the way the work is done – as long as the employer has the right to direct and control the work.

An employee is generally subject to the business’s instructions about when, where, and how to work. All of the following are examples of types of instructions about how to do work.

When and where to do the work.
What tools or equipment to use.
What workers to hire or to assist with the work.
Where to purchase supplies and services.
What work must be performed by a specified individual.
What order or sequence to follow when performing the work.

the business provides the worker with training on how to do the job, this indicates that the business wants the job done in a particular way. This is strong evidence that the worker is an employee. Periodic or on-going training about procedures and methods is even stronger evidence of an employer-employee relationship.

Uber is the complete opposite EB. Uber gets paid directly by the passenger electronically and then has to pay the drivers. Even cabs would be that way sometimes now with so many people paying with cards.
