Rand Paul. I think this is the man. He really intrigues me. Strikes me as being a real smart guy.

Was thinking he fits the profile of my guess (junior Washington guy, has experience in community, backed up with life experience at a job, tea party links but also the guy whose taken on both Dems and old guard Reps). I'm guessing the right should -try- an Obama-like candidate who has the appearance (at least) of being outside the system

But some of his 'scandals' (all minor) are possible problems, not least plagarism of newspaper columns might hurt him. Again, all that matters are those 10% changeable voters. Get them to swing in a half-dozen key states, and the White House is yours. Without upsetting too may of your core support.

If the GOP scares you then you are left. The GOP is the middle.

You make a lot of assumptions. In 2016 I will have been a registered Republican for 40 years. Doesn't mean I can't see the Republicans blundering their way into another grim and expensive defeat.

You can register however you want, that does not mean one is not left of center.

The GOP does not run good campaigns, I will admit that. But if you want to compare positions that should "scare moderate voters" the positions of the Democrats should be far more scary to them. I do not recall a GOP candidate promising to skyrocket my electric bill for one example.

Here is a little help for those who can't see the videos:

"Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket."

Obviously, he managed to make the argument that it needed to get done, as he says in his reply.

The fact the Reps lost the last election when the economy and middle America's bank accounts were on the line shows how badly they run their campaigns (and how well the Dems surgical targeting of specific wards and counties worked). I honestly don't know how they can improve that in 2016. It won't be with a multi-millionaire investment specialist.

Against a rather unpopular incumbent, too.

I'll save them some money and hand them the election:

All they need to do is nominate the Democratic candidate for president, along with their own candidate for VP.

I know. I know. But in 1991 Bush the elder's reelection seemed like a done deal, what with the popular war victory against Iraq in the Gulf War and the poverty of the Democratic field. So the Democrats got that same advice as I gave above, half in jest, and then promptly won.

So there :)
