MALAYSIA AIRLINES IS RESTRUCTURING
http://leehamnews.com/2015/04/30/malaysia-air-fleet-restructuring/

Not shocking after losing two Boeing 777s a few months apart. They are having a widebody firesale
6/6 of its Airbus A380s,
4/13 Boeing 777-200ERs
2/2 Boeing 747-400Fs and
2/2 Airbus A330-200Fs and

That would leave the airline with a single Boeing 747-400, 9 Boeing 777-200ERs, and 76 narrow body jets. The sale of freighter planes will put Air Malaysia out of the freight business.

Of the six A380's two pairs are flying the 6.5K mile trip from Kuala Lumpar to London and Paris. So the most obvious customers would be British Airways and Air France (2 apiece) to fly them on the same route. The remaining 2 A380's I believe are on loan to Turkish Air.

There are 422 of the Boeing 777-200ERs active so selling four more of these should not be a problem.

Another possibility is that virgin Air has had 6 A380's on delayed order for 15 years. Perhaps Airbus will let them drop the order, and they can purchase the slightly used jets at a discount.

I think that is consistent across all airlines. The orders for the current version of A380 that exist will take over 6 years at this production rate. In the interim Malaysia Airlines has put all 6 of their two year old A380's on the market. In 5.5 years the Emirates planes are expected to start being turned back over to their leaseholds to be leased out to other airlines. The new B777X will be available.

Sales of the A380 are completely dead without this fuel savings changes

Well, they just won a huge 100 plane order from Avianca. But Boeing received many more widebody orders, while Airbus only received 35 for their aging A330/

Finally sold a ticket on a A380
Air Qatar
passenger was flying from MDT to BKK roundtrip.
On the return BKK to DOH sold a seat on A380.
Who knows, may have sold a seat before, dont pay a lot of attention to equipment codes unless I see an unusual equipment code.

QA has been flying A380 on Doha (DOH)–Bangkok,London,Paris starting last fall. They have only accepted 4 of 10 airframe and are due to take another 2 this year. They are waiting for the upgraded version before ordering any more.

Airbus has delivered 8 so far in 2015. There seems to be no chance that they have increased production from 24 to 30. They pretty much have to make a decision by the end of the year to go ahead with the neo version.

U.S. airlines will carry 222 million passengers between June 1 and Aug. 31, topping the summer of 2007 when 217.6 million people flew

With a record number of flights on A380 to USA (29 and adding some) and 31 million people flying on International flights over the three months this summer, more Americans will get their first flight on an A380. Perhaps the logjam will break and save Airbus.

Possible, but I doubt it. The A380 is showing all the signs of something someone built more for ego than for sound business reasons.

Well with only about half of the orders have been delivered. They have to make a decision to build a neo version this year. I doubt that any more will beordered in the present configuration. Even worse if they don't build the neo version then probably some of the existing orders will be cancelled.

The write down will be in the tens of billions of dollars.
