pet peeve: people who talk as though there is a 'dark side' to the moon

there is a 'far side' to the moon, and it is always facing away from Earth owing to tidal lock. But it faces the sun plenty, Pink Floyd claims notwithstanding

on CNBC two people who should know better made the gaffe this morning

Well, I understand "dark matter" isn't dark, it's just invisible and I know scientists use that term.

Pet peeve: improper terminology

When ships travel the from the Arabian Sea to the Gulf of Oman (and vice-versa), they are NOT "crossing" the Strait of Hormuz. They are transiting or passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

They would be "crossing" the Strait of Hormuz if they travelled from Oman or UAE to Iran and from Iran to Oman or UAE.

I don't think too many people who say 'dark side of the moon' mean it as 'the unknown side' but I didn't think of that and could be wrong

now of course it's not an unknown side

Let's just blame Pink Floyd and be done with it. : )

Not really a pet peeve of mine but just wanted to share what happened.

The store I was at, because of the penny being discontinued, has a policy that totals ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents round down, while 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents round up to the nearest $0.05.

I went through a self checkout lane and my total was $5.31. I then inserted $5.30 (a $5 bill, one quarter and one nickel). The machine did not “round down” my total and would not complete the transaction. I then inserted another quarter, the machine then completed the sale and gave me back a quarter in change

To err is human. To really foul things up requires a computer...

there's a lot of stuff they allow for household use that there was evidently some debate about, such as Sevin for garden pests, and Permethrin* for bug repellent for clothes

you have to figure even though they tell you to totally avoid small incidental contact it's surely mostly OK, emphasis small and incidental, or they wouldn't sell it. Still , I *try* to avoid it, and use gloves

My pet peeve is the spray bottles they sell leak as you use it. A little bit of the stuff getting on your skin is probably going to happen. I guess they know that, but the fact of it bugs the hell out of me ... and it does seem they could design a bottle that didn't leak

* not to be used on skin, and clothes have to dry. I'm experimenting with it as it's better for arachnids, such as ticks and chiggers

best to wear gloves, which I said. Irritating meanwhile to think that if you didn't get the stuff dripping down on you, wouldn't need them

I think all my spray bottles leak. I have noticed drain cleaner has a pretty leak resistant lid, yet the cap seems almost loose. I guess I should examine it and see what the secret is,
