Aren't they saying that, while the area that the ice is covering is larger, the volume of the ice that is covering that area is smaller, and all of that volume of ice that is no longer part of the area in in liquid form in the oceans?

Which area? Sea ice melting doesn't change the level. If the ice pack on the continent of Antarctica were to melt that water would increase the amount of water in the oceans. We don't understand our climate well enough to know if that level of warming will cause the uptake of water in other areas such as the atmosphere, lake levels and vegetation. As a society we prove time after time that out tunnel vision on a single fact seldom gets the big picture correct.

land ice is shrinking.

sea ice is growing.

any land ice that becomes sea ice displaces water and raises water levels.

any land ice that melts and becomes sea water raises water levels.

Water levels have been changing for billions of years.

Yep, and I just listed some reasons for how it can happen now.

Who cares? We can no more affect it than we can stop the sun from rising in the morning.

If we did not have the technology to modify weather then why do we have treaties which agree to not use weather as a WMD?

sea ice is generally frozen sea water and doesn't increase the level. That is why the Arctic ice pack shrinks in the summer and increases in the winter. The same is true in the Antarctic but the seasons are opposite. Not sure what your claim on sea ice is even supposed to mean.

Yeah, 1976 technology was terrifying. The Bond
movie Spy Who Loved Me came out in 76.

I am not sure how much more clear I can be.

If the ice on land in antartica moves into the sea, either frozen or liquid, water levels will rise.

If the sea ice around antartica shrank because it melted, but the sea ice cover is now larger than it was because it was replaced and made larger from the ice fhat was on the land, then water levels will rise.

As for not being able to change the climate: nuclear winter, 3 gorges dam, city smog.

The first is a single huge event that will eventually be recovered from, unless it reaches a tipping point,
The second is having regional effects on the temperature and rainfall patterns, which will persist as long as the dam is there,
And the 3rd is caused by many many much smaller causes that add up to a local effect.

Enough small causes, several medium sized ones, or one giant one, can affect the global climate.

By the way - we can change when the sun rises and sets. The 3 gorges dam has slowed the rotation of the earth.

The error in you logic is that the increasing sea ice IS NOT ICE FROM THE LAND it is simply that the ocean is freezing during winter. The ocean freezes and thaws continually at both poles.
