It seems to me that when you see the letter Z in Spanish it is usually at the end of a word, like nariz. The assignment for the advanced readers is to confirm or deny this finding. For extra credit, but a common etymology to words ending in z. Ejemplo time. La vestido de Ginger hoy esta mas audaz como de costumbre. = Ginger's dress today is more daring than usual. It's not a common letter, but it's all over. Do you recall the word "azar"? You really should. Then there are: zorro, zebra, zanahoria, azalea, just off the top of my head.

It isn't the most common letter, but less than 1% of Spanish words that use the letter z have it as the final letter Spanish words that end in z are usually nouns or adjectives. For Spanish nouns that end in z, the "z" will turn into a "c" and followed by "es" in plural forms. I couldn't find it in the dictionary but a Google search led to lots of images of bikini-clad women, so I'm 99.54% sure I'm right. By the way, I ordered a subscription to the Spanish edition of People magazine, which I'll use to get new words for a while. Hopefully not using Spanish translations of English books will make Nareed happy. Of course the August edition of People is going to use the word bikinazo at least once. The question for the advanced readers is to find the the etymology of bikinazo. According to SpanishDict.com, the word for bikini in Spanish is just bikini. Since bikini is a new word, I think originating in the 1950's, I would think that Spanish would have just adopted the English word. Ejemplo time. No recurdas esto bikinazo blanco de Ginger en la programa de televisión. = I don't recall Ginger's white bikini on the television program.  Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

Actually the Bikini atoll in the Marshall Islands locally known as Pikinni, was the location of the first major post WWII atomic bomb test in June 1946. As a word with no association with Indo-european languages, I don't know why Spanish speakers would have changed it. A word search shows that all Spanish words that end in "ni" alwasy have an accent on the final letter "ní". Perhaps it was changed to be a more familiar sound. I won't go into the specifics just now, but rather give you both a chance to spot your error. Here's a hint, related to the recently concluded kickball tournament: the Spanish word for an alledged score in that wretched time waster is NOT, repeat NOT "Golazo." "Golazo" seems to mean "colossal goal" or "great goal". So presumably Bikinazo means "great bikinis". So presumably this is just a "bikini"  |

Boricua means Puerto Rican. I came across the word in comments about a previous article about somebody named Chayanne. I don't know if that is just a last name or a full name, like Prince. Another related word is borinqueño, which as near as I can tell, means the same thing. The assignment for the advanced readers is to find and discuss the etymology of the word. Ejemplo time.
