It had all the ingredients I generally like in a movie and I still found it rather boring and empty. Okay, who else is going to see Alita Battle Angel besides me? Knowledge is Good -- Emil Faber |

It's an awful big budget ($170 million) for what seems like a fairly simple film. I've read that it is ultra violent. Not a terrible opening for a Thursday, but I don't think it can make back production budget. ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL 965,300 The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part 937,000 |

A lot of positive reviews but one rather bad one that states- Mitzi Peirone’s debut feature is so void of any substance beyond the pretentiously pictorial that one suspects her real calling is in music videos or advertising. We will have to change our image of a film director to include women who look like models
Typical Disney in that it remakes the original 1978 European film with a massive budget, but it is such a feel-good film that I know people who watch it every time they are depressed. Gene Hackman's character is looking dated in this day when relatable politicians are rushing to say that they are bisexual, gay or united with their spirit animal and they did inhale. |

The premise of "La Cage Aux Folles", not just that a gender dysphoric man might be a homosexual, but that such a person is the very definition of a homosexual*, seems extremely dated now *I suppose you could argue about that, but it is my take on that movie I'm Still Standing, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah [it's an old guy chant for me] |

A 40 year old movie is bound to seem dated in some ways. But, this cross-dressing scene is from 1942, Irving Berlin's "This is the Army" and was made in a movie with Ronald Reagan. So I think that even in the 1940's it was possible to show cross-dressing without overt correlation with homosexuality. |

odiousgambit Member since: Oct 28, 2012 Threads: 154 Posts: 5114 | I saw two things recently that struck me the same way Bird Cage did: "Dog Day Afternoon", movie is about trying to rob a bank for the benefit of his gay lover, so the lover could get a sex change operation "Soap", a 1981 serial on TV my wife wanted to rewatch and I watched for the first time. Billy Crystal playing a gay man, and it's a very dated view of homosexuality. The sex change operation thing again as a homosexual's 'obvious' goal in life. I guess I haven't seen Bird Cage in a while, but I don't even remember them discussing sex change operations. I found a list of supposedly transgender movies, but it seems like a lot of them are not about sex change operations, but involve cross dressing. La Cage aux Folles is not even on the list.
