Look at Dalton Trumbo. Even blacklisted he was in demand because he could turn dog crap into gold. Every actor and producer knows it starts and ends with the writer. I saw Don Jon the other night and was blown away at how good it was, considering it was the first time writing and directing for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the guy who played the kid on 3rd Rock From the Sun. It was so good I'll see it again. What talent he has. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (age 37) is proving to be one of the great talents of his generation. Greta Gerwig (age 34) is another one. As you pointed out, Looper, was full of holes, but JGL's acting broke through the rather stupid plotline. |

He has a real screen presence, it's hard to take your eyes off him because he acts with his eyes and face, which many actors do not. And to be able to write and direct too? It doesn't happen often. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

It made its budget back domestically. How is that a flop? “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

It is full of very graphic violence and nudity. Jennifer Lawrence bares all - I was actually compelled to research afterwards whether or not she used a body double & CGI trickery or not (apparently not). Overall it's an interesting thriller. About 20 minutes too long though. “A straight man will not go for kids.” - AZDuffman |

For a movie to make a profit it has to make 3 times the production costs. The Post didn't even make double yet. It was a snoozefest, nobody cared.. If you take a risk, you may lose. If you never take a risk, you will always lose. |

Studios take home 50% of domestic revenue, and less of foreign revenue (only 25% in China). Since no one really knows accounting, as "rule of thumb" if a movie makes back it's production budget in domestic revenue (and keeps 50%) it is believed that the film will be profitable once foreign sales, DVD, streaming, TV, etc. is collected. For a movie almost entirely aimed at adults over age 30, "The Post" did rather well, behind only MOTOE and FSD. The Post: Production Budget: $50 million Domestic: $80,369,969 54.6% + Foreign: $66,900,000 45.4% = Worldwide: $147,269,96 Murder on the Orient Express (2017): Production Budget: $55 million Domestic: $102,826,543 29.4% + Foreign: $247,517,191 70.6% = Worldwide: $350,343,734 Fifty Shades Darker: Production Budget: $55 million Domestic: $114,581,250 30.1% + Foreign: $266,547,533 69.9% = Worldwide: $381,128,783 |
