I can't speak for anyone else, but it was 2020 not 2016. And, I supported it when Trump tried it and I supported it when Biden tried it. I even remember saying back then something to the effect of, "this is one of the best policies Trump has proposed, and I am glad somebody is actually addressing it." Of course now Trump is a huge TikTok supporter (which is odd, because I thought he was anti-China, and this is one of the largest benefits to China that he can provide, but anyway.....) My guess is he got a juicy donation from them.... However, I am pretty academically consistent, if I like something Trump did I give him credit, and if I don't like something Biden did, I have no issue blasting him. |

I fully agree, that is why I even said in the OP I despise TikTok but my personal taste is not a reason to ban something. But, yes TikTok is pure brainrot content, and I am just baffled that so many people like it. I will say me hating it makes me feel less bad about it being banned. But, of course the reason to ban it is their data practices. The whole few second videos of nonsense are just terribly unartistic or engaging. I just do not understand the appeal. And, sadly Youtube (which I actually enjoy,) since the start of TikTok has a whole "YT Shorts" thing which is a clear emulation and equal garbage (but to be fair it is pretty easy to hide and ignore it, it is not the whole platform, though if you do run a channel, they push the fact that you have to publish shorts pretty hard.) |

I am sure, but I even recall many Republicans hating it in 2020, TikTok seems to be rotting everyone's brain equally to the point of an addiction almost. And, then add in the many politicians that owe financial favors to bytedance.... Like I said I can only speak for myself. I supported Trump in 2020 for attempting it, I support Biden for attempting now, and I oppose Trump for flipflopping on it now to the point where it is almost certain he will backpedal everything day 1. TikTok should be banned, whichever President supports or opposes this is frankly irrelevant, it is the proper view. |

The "something" you allude to must be the same "something" that advises you regualarly because gee willikers are you wrong. I know nothing of the attempt you mention; I don't tik tok. I simply call out bull shit artists and venal convicted felons when I see them. |

The appeal is to people with short attention spans, or who don't want to sit through the tedium of a much longer vid-for better or for worse, I learned how to wire a smart light switch, fix my washing machine plumbing problems, wire an electrical junction box, choose the right type of pre-emergent crabgrass treatment, and a few other things via YT shorts. Sometimes, the shorts lead me to longer vids with more content to teach me more stuff. I use YT for education and enrichment,and not for brain rot. I hope. Assuming TT's data practices are a national security threat, the solution is to ban the practice across the board and not to ban the app. There are TT competitors that use the exact same practices and are not banned, nor are the data practices banned themselves. Congress and Trump and Biden are bunch of knuckleheads on this issue. |
