I would dispute that pagers are more dependable. The pager systems have way fewer antennas and only one base station. If the base station goes down you are dead in the water.

For not standing under a tree in a thunderstorm, the explanation I've seen before is that a tree attracts lightning due to its height, but the tree itself is wood, a non-conductor. You, however, are pretty much just a column of saltwater, a conductor. Need I continue?
