Republicans are simply demonstrating that the only, 'Freedom,' they GAF about is the freedom that they say you're permitted to have. It's the same thing with the church (Evangelical) and anything else; you're allowed to do whatever you want as long as what you want is on this list of things that I will permit you to do. This has been the case for as long as I can remember with the only difference being the direct targeting of a particular subset of people/events is a bit more egregious than it has been in the last few years. That said, I'm not going to defend this action whatsoever, but I am going to make some numbered statements. 1.) Provided there are laws regulating the sale of alcohol (such as not selling it to minors), I don't think a liquor license should be required in the first place. Of course, they are required in most states, if not all of them. 2.) This targeting clearly has nothing to do with the fact that alcohol was served. There is also no logical reason for the liquor board (or equivalent) to care whether or not there was a drag show or what that show consisted of. I would think it would be for them to limit their purview to violations directly involving liquor. 3.) However, by the letter of their law (as far as I can tell from the Petition), the legal reasoning seems valid enough. 4.) I make no claims to know whether or not the facts, as presented in the Petition, are strictly true. 5.) The facts stated in the Petition were that there were individuals under the age of 16 in attendance and that the performance was of an overt sexual nature. The first of those two things is pretty cut and dry---there either were or there were not individuals under age 16 present. The second of those two statements is the more subjective one, and I wasn't there, so I don't know. The question then becomes: Should parents be allowed to take their children, under age of 16, to live performances in which there are overt simulations of sexual acts? I don't think it's for me to tell parents what to do in that regard, but I wouldn't knowingly take my kids to such a performance. Either way, I guess we have to move the goalposts to whether or not it is grooming...which is a weird word anyway. If the cause of action in the Petition is true, then it is on record that there are sometimes drag shows, with overtly sexual simulations, that children (with their parents) are sometimes attending. The argument that such a thing never happens is out the window. "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen..let us give them all they want." William T. Sherman |

If a 16 y/o kid or even a 12 y/o can't somehow find an internet access point and see hard core porn, the kids are really getting dumb. We need to check the water for lead or something. Also, even if you don't give your a kid a phone, it only takes one kid with a phone to show a whole bunch of stuff to his friends. Maybe it's sad, I don't know, but the world hasn't ended yet. One way or another, the discussion is about Legislating morality. You're always Legislating morality, at some point, with a lot of things. Why is homicide illegal? Enough people agree that it's fundamentally immoral to kill people, unless you're involved in a war, at which point putting a bullet through somebody's skull is an act of almost incomprehensible virtue. Of course, those are people that we weren't born in the same broad geographical vicinity as they were, so I guess that's what makes all the difference in whether or not we should kill one another. Of course, we also have Constitutional Rights, but again, that was because, at one point, it was decided enough people could agree that all (white men) people should have these things, followed by all (men) should have these things, then eventually all people having those things. Anyway, I take your point about online porn. Again, I'd lean on the side that doesn't prevent parents from doing anything, unless it is, by definition, some other type of crime in the process. Of course, this Petition is to sanction the hotel, not the parents who took their kids to the show. As far as conduct on private property, I'm in favor of absolute rights as long as no other significant law is being violated---and I don't see any laws that were definitely being violated by this event, as far as minors are concerned. Maybe lewd sexual conduct, depending on the wording, but you'd think they would have went after the performers by now if they thought they had them on that. Do I think it's objectionable, perhaps immoral, to take your children under 16 to such a performance? Sure. However, just because I think that doesn't mean that all other parents are required to believe that. That's not because it's drag, by the way, I just wouldn't take either of my minor children under the age of 16 to any event in which I knew, or suspected, simulated sexual acts would be happening. They could be simulated heterosexual sexual acts; it wouldn't make a difference. Of course, I also think indoctrinating children into religion is morally objectionable in the highest possible order and to the utmost degree. If I followed that to the extent that some Republicans do, I guess it would see me publicly advocating for the abolition of ALL religion. Of course, this country has freedom of religion, so I am not going to advocate otherwise. Should the country ever decide to stomp out the scourge that is organized religion, I certainly wouldn't join in the country with that, but nor would I lift a finger to ever defend religious rights. I am starting to wonder if we should still even be trying to protect kids from sexually explicit images and lyrics. It may have made sense before, although I don't know if I agree with it, but today all that information is readily available. What is it we are trying to protect them from? What other forms of education do we try to protect kids from? At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent. |

Big difference. One is a law and the other is a bill that will never make it to law. At my age a Life In Prison sentence is not much of a deterrent. |
