You don't seem to grasp my point: in order to be legally hired in the USA you must have a valid SS# so that your employer can issue a W-4 and notify the state so that all taxes / witholdings occur.

I always thought so, and it sure looks that way: but crooked growers violate the law with seeming impunity, hiring illegals who I assume lie about their SS#, giving them a fake one, then moving on to a new employer the following year with a new, fake SS#.
