Well considering the U.S. has not invaded Cuba to annex it, its completely different. In fact the U.S. went to war to help liberate Cuba in the 1800s (and other Spanish colonies) from colonial control, and the only thing the U.S. got in return was a naval base in Guantanamo Bay (which they technically only have exclusive lease rights to, even if it is still like two dollars a year since Castro refused to negotiate a modern lease after taking power).

Only one slight problem, the US did try to invade it and failed, Bay of Pigs mean anything to you youngster. To the credit of the US though when they weren't welcomed with open arms as they expected, the US didn't continue.

Except it didn't, The Bay of Pigs was the U.S. backing a revolutionary group, not trying to take the Country for itself. Plus, the Bay of Pigs is most well known for the U.S. stepping back when most needed, allowing Castro to take control. It's actually well taught even in basic H.S. U.S. history classes, but not for the reasons that you imply. The Bay of Pigs is a standard staple of sophomore HS history.

The U.S. has never tried to annex territory by force in the last 100 years. If anything it is guilty of backing rebels all across the world.

The US provided air support for several days and likely (but unacknowledged) had some boots on the ground in a support role. The invaders were actually counter-revolutionaries. Castro was the revolutionary.

The US was certainly trying to take over control of the country by placing a mailable leadership in place. Would you say that Russia didn't control the old Soviet Union? Ukraine, Poland, East Germany, Yugoslavia, the Stans and the others were all 'independent' countries.

More often than not a distinction without a difference when and where we’ve done this (constantly.)

The terror attack on Krymskiy Most – the Crimea Bridge – was the proverbial straw that broke the Eurasian camel’s back."

The fact that the Russians are evacuating Kherson is ironic since that is a city they just voted to anex.

It looks bad for Russia
Obviously nobody in Russia believes Pepe Escobar and his prediction of shock and awe.

A half-dozen Russian soldiers talk about being shipped to an area of intense fighting in eastern Ukraine just 11 days after their mobilization. Asked about his shooting practice, a bearded conscript says, “Once. Three magazines.”

In a town near Yekaterinburg, in central Russia, newly mobilized men march in place in their street clothes. “No machine guns, nothing, no clothes, no shoes,” says an unidentified observer. “Half of them are hungover, old, at risk — the ambulance should be on duty.”

Russia doesn't care about the conscripts if they take out 1 Ukrainian soldier per 3 Russians they will be happy. As long as can bomb anywhere they want in Ukraine they are winning the war. The war of attrition will go to Russian not Ukraine.
