We will have to agree to disagree. I think there are lots of moderates or centrists or independents or whatever you want to call them that COULDN’T CARE LESS if he appoints a black woman to SCOTUS, but care enough to be disturbed that he used race as a DISQUALIFYING factor in his SCOTUS selection.

The reason that pushes to over 50 percent democrats in the ABC poll because a small percentage of that think there are no black women qualified for Scotus. I would say about 25 percent of the right assume this or they assume Biden will pick a black woman who's not as qualified.

To assert that pledging a “black woman”means Biden's picking “solely” based on race--something that some right pundits have said--would entail the assumption that there are no qualified black women to serve in SCOTUS. Or the black woman chosen wouldn't be as qualified.

I apologize for misunderstanding your post, then. I imagine some of the white, male, Conservative, Evangelical Christian hicks in the South might believe there are no qualified black female judges for the SCOTUS. Of course, the better part of those guys couldn't spell, "Constitution," if I spotted them every other letter, so who really cares what they think?

What I maintain is that there are many individuals who are qualified for SCOTUS and of all races and both genders. I don't know if there are any transexuals who are qualified, or not, because I don't know or care if any transexuals are Federal judges. I would also say that the objective/quantifiable requirements are so few, to the extent that they exist at all, that it would be difficult to point to a person and call them, "Unqualified," provided certain criteria are met.

Anyway, I think that right pundits can say whatever the hell they want on this one (other than flat out calling the nominee unqualified) because it was the Democrats (Biden) who made this pick about race. Biden introduced race into the conversation---why? Just pick the candidate (whoever it may be) and rep that you're picking the person you think is the best candidate---don't even open this line up for discussion about other candidates being overlooked who may be, in the view of the detractors, 'Better qualified.'

And, also, everyone except for me conveniently ignores that making it about being a black woman is exclusionary to all other minority women---not just to white people and men...though you've already cut out a large percentage from consideration by eliminating white people and men of all colors.

He was always going to use being white as a DISQUALIFYING factor, but I don't really care about that. Whether or not the next SCOTUS Justice is white is of absolutely no concern to me whatsoever.

I also never really thought it was in doubt that Biden was going to pick a black woman, which is why I don't see the need to advertise in advance that black women are the only potential nominees being considered. I guess I could see the benefit of a virtue signal if we were anywhere near 11/2024, but we're not, so I really don't see what making the race/gender of the person known before naming them accomplishes for you.

MY PROBLEM is that Biden's telegraphing of this pick is to the exclusion of other minorities, though pragmatically, him announcing it doesn't change that he might have only considered a black woman anyway. I also don't see a great strategic benefit to the selection being a black woman because Democrats also dominate in the black vote, so if you are going to overtly make it about race (which IS the problem), it's not a great strategic choice when it comes to trying to make inroads with voting blocs...you're already dominating the black vote as it is.

Again, the answer is simple: political expediency, throwing a sop to BLM and their ilk (those damned progressives).

He really did! He acknowledged the mistake on Twitter himself...how in the hell could he possibly have made that mistake?

I could see if he was younger and did not remember Marshall, but come on! I think it was just the natural Democrat ploy of attacking white males that he could not help himself.

I agree. Schumer was age 16 when Marshall was sworn in, but he was age 40 when Marshall retired. Schumer was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York from the age of 30 until the age of 50.

Chuck Schumer misspoke. He's not wrong in the vein that the highest court was virtually all white men until 1981. Thurgood Marshall was a deviation of the standard all white male up to 1981. Over 99 percent on SCOTUS were white men until 1981. For nearly the first 2 centuries, white men were only considered for inclusion on supreme court. Even after 1981 roughly 75 percent were white men.

So it's a joke to argue that pledging a black woman would disqualify white men.

So unless Marshall is the world's worst cast of too much time in the tanning salon he IS WRONG!

He wanted to attack whites and in particular white males to impress his base. He made a jackass out of himself. Had it been AOC we could write it off to her being young and stupid. But he voted on Marshall's replacement. How could he not remember?
