Someone earlier said that the root of the conflict is that the two sides look at life differently. Let me suggest that the difference is individualism vs. collectivism. In general, conservatives resist collective action to restrict behavior in favor of the virtue of individual choice of while liberals are more likely to embrace collective action so solve problems. It's not a universal rule of course. I suspect that a Libertarian will be along shortly to point out that they are the only ones that are true to an individualist philosophy.

I'm a little more pragmatic. I embrace individualism in general, but I accept that there are sometimes collective threats that should be addressed with a collective plan of action.
